    Their military build up, antagonization of neighboring countries, rhetoric towards Taiwan (who want to be free of Beijing's rule) & the dramatic erosion of democratic principles in Hong Kong over the last couple years says different. Poobear Jinping has repeatedly told his military to prepare for war. China hasn't needed war to be successful throughout the last two decades, why does it feel the need to make such antagonizing statements?

His trip comes just a week after a meeting of the leaders of the U.S., Japan, Australia and India, an alliance of countries seeking to counter China’s expansionism called the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or the Quad.

    Mr. Austin met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Friday and his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, on Saturday.

    Mr. Austin said boosting military cooperation with India was a priority for the Biden administration. The new U.S. administration has been quick in reaching out to its allies and close partners like India to forge a stronger front against China.

    China Buys More Iranian and Venezuelan Oil, in a Test for Bide
    China has sharply increased its imports of oil from Iran and Venezuela in a challenge to two Biden administration foreign-policy priorities, according to U.S. officials, undermining key diplomatic leverage Washington needs to restart long-stalled negotiations.

    China is expected to import 918,000 barrels a day from Iran in March, which would be the highest volume since a full U.S. oil embargo was imposed against Tehran two years ago, according to commodities-data company Kpler.

    That trend is confirmed by other shipping trackers, some of which see those sales at 1 million barrels a day.

    “If it sells 1 million barrels a day at current prices, Iran has no incentive to negotiate,” said Sara Vakhshouri, president of Washington-based SVB Energy International and an expert on Iran’s oil industry.

    President Biden’s administration has sought to engage with Iran to return to a 2015 nuclear deal that was exited by his predecessor, former President Donald Trump. But Tehran has rebuffed overtures so far.

    As miners eye expansions in the global race to secure a supply of lithium, a critical element in electric vehicle batteries, China’s Yibin Tianyi Lithium Industry has extended a US$15 million zero-interest loan to expand its relationship Australian miner Pilbara Minerals amid a steady trade of the mineral between the two countries.

    The loan from lithium chemical producer Yibin is in the form of an unsecured prepayment to Pilbara Minerals’ operating subsidiary, Pilgangoora Operation, and is the second stake that its backer, China’s largest electric vehicle battery maker, Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), has taken in the company.

    Yibin was established in 2018 as a joint venture between CATL and two other Chinese companies, chemical business Tianyuan Group and machinery manufacturer Canmax, before CATL acquired a 8.5 per cent stake in Pilbara Minerals in 2019 for A$55 million (US$42.6 million).

    “Our relationship continues to grow with Yibin Tianyi as we work together in support of both our businesses’ growth ambitions; for Yibin Tianyi, to become one of the biggest lithium chemical suppliers in China with the support of our major shareholder, CATL, and for us to become one of the largest, lowest cost lithium raw material suppliers in the world,” Pilbara’s managing director Ken Brinsden said.

    The investment comes as demand for lithium explodes amid a global boom in electric vehicles, which are dependent on lithium-ion batteries, and as countries step up efforts to exert control over the supply chains of minerals critical to their production, including lithium.

    Australia, which is the world’s largest exporter of lithium – providing around 55 per cent of the world’s supply – anticipates demand for the mineral to charge forward, with its department of industry predicting world demand will rise by 36.6 per cent this year and 20.5 per cent next year. Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategy, which was drawn up in 2019, lists lithium as a critical mineral.

    Australian miners are also expecting the well-established lithium trade route with China – their closest major buyer – to continue to thrive in spite of the two countries’ bilateral tensions.

    Saudi Aramco to prioritise energy supply to China for 50 years, says CEO
    BEIJING (Reuters) - Saudi Aramco will ensure China’s energy security remains its highest priority for the next 50 years and beyond as new and existing energy sources run in parallel for some time, CEO Amin Nasser told the China Development Forum on Sunday.

    Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, retained its position as China’s top supplier in the first two months this year, with volumes up 2.1% to 1.86 million barrels per day (bpd), China customs data showed on Saturday.

    The kingdom beat Russia to keep its ranking as China’s top crude supplier in 2020 despite unprecedented production cuts in a pact between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies to balance global markets after demand plunged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    “Ensuring the continuing security of China’s energy needs remains our highest priority – not just for the next five years but for the next 50 and beyond,” Nasser said in a video speech.

    “We appreciate that sustainable energy solutions are crucial to a faster and smoother global energy transition ... But, realistically, this will take some time since there are few alternatives to oil in many areas.”

    Nasser told an earnings call earlier on Sunday that Chinese demand was very close to pre-pandemic levels while Asia, East Asia in particular, had seen a strong pickup.

    Besides being a top supplier of China’s energy needs, Nasser said Aramco is also well-placed to help China achieve its second centennial goal in energy transition.

    Chinese President Xi Jinping announced in September that China will bring its carbon emissions to a peak before 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060, a pledge that is expected to create a tectonic shift in its energy and manufacturing sectors.

    The state oil giant also expects opportunities for further investment in downstream projects to help to meet China’s needs for heavy transport and chemicals, as well as lubricants and non-metallic materials, Nasser said.

    GUANGZHOU, China — Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), China’s largest and most important chipmaker, is building a new factory in Shenzhen that will cost $2.35 billion.

    The company and the government of the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen will jointly put capital into the project. Shenzhen is known as a huge technology hub in China and houses the headquarters of giants such as Tencent and Huawei.

    SMIC is key to China’s plans to boost self-sufficiency in the semiconductor industry amid tensions with the U.S., which has exposed the world’s second-largest economy’s reliance on foreign technology in the field.

    In December, Washington put SMIC on a blacklist called the Entity List which restricts American companies from exporting technology to it. The move was seen as a blow to SMIC’s ability to catch up to the most cutting-edge chipmaking technology. The Chinese firm is already far behind its rivals TSMC and Samsung.

    The new Shenzhen plant will help SMIC ramp up production of so-called 28 nanometer and above chips. Such chips are quite old technology. TSMC and Samsung are manufacturing 5 nanometer semiconductors, the most cutting-edge chips which are used in smartphones.

    But a recent shortage of semiconductors globally has left some industries, such as automobiles, needing chips. But such industries don’t necessarily need the latest chip technology. One analyst previously told CNBC that SMIC could fulfil some of this demand with its older chip technology.

    SMIC said the money from the Shenzhen government will allow it to “expand its production scale, advance its nanotechnology service and thus achieve a higher return.”

    US Secretary of State Antony Blinken used his first official European engagement on Tuesday to talk up America’s renewed embrace of the transatlantic alliance, a day after Western nations engaged in a fiery, coordinated exchange of sanctions with China.

    China’s ability to invade Taiwan ‘much closer than most think’, US Indo-Pacific Command nominee says
    Beijing will have the ability to invade Taiwan sooner than current predictions would suggest, US President Joe Biden’s nominee to lead America’s Indo-Pacific Command said on Tuesday.

    Speaking in a hearing with the Senate Armed Services Committee, Admiral John Aquilino said that the point at which China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would be equipped for such a mission was “much closer than most think”, dismissing varying predicted timelines that extend out to 2045.

    “We have to take this on, put those deterrence capabilities like [the Pacific Deterrence Initiative] in place in the near term and with urgency,” Aquilino said, referring to a mandate written into the 2021 National defence Authorisation Act to fulfil the national defence strategy and maintain a military edge over China.

    The nominee for America’s top Pacific naval commander was responding to a question from Arkansas Republican Senator Tom Cotton about what the current head of the US Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral Philip Davidson, said about the issue earlier this month.

    “I worry that they’re accelerating their ambitions to supplant the United States and our leadership role in the rules-based international order,” Davidson told the same Senate committee on March 9. “They’ve said that they want to do that by 2050. I’m worried about them moving that target closer. Taiwan is clearly one of their ambitions before that. And I think the threat is manifest during this decade, in fact in the next six years.”

    China, Russia agree to work together against ‘illegitimate’ sanctions
    Beijing and Moscow agreed to push back against pressure from Washington during talks in China, with Russia’s foreign minister denouncing “illegitimate” sanctions imposed on them by the US and its allies and “destructive” Cold War tactics.

    Meeting in the southern city of Guilin on Monday and Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov agreed to “work together against sanctions”.

    They also called for a summit of permanent members of the UN Security Council to resolve “humankind’s common problems” at a time of heightened global political turbulence.

    In addition, they proposed a new dialogue platform be set up to address regional security concerns.

    “[Western powers] should know that the days when they can arbitrarily interfere in China’s internal affairs by making up stories and lies are long gone,” Wang said during the talks, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.

    The meeting took place after the European Union on Monday announced sanctions on four Chinese officials and an entity over human rights violations in Xinjiang, which was followed by a similar announcement from the US, Canada and Britain.

    “China is trying to intimidate us by silencing MEPs [members of European Parliament] because they denounced the human rights abuses against Uygurs in China,” said Weber in a video posted to social media.
