In 1987, when the next generation came out, I was 16.
People back then thought Kirk was better, and only years later were younger people choosing Picard over Kirk.

Captains Log – Stardate: 15835.0
The Bloatlord vs Baldlord battle for supremacy continues to rage aboard the USS Misker, sparking dissention in the ranks, with AverageKenneth negging OP for being a nerd.
Overtrainbrah is fully engaged in ‘Picard krew’ and takes no days off. Opposing him is Kalikonic who would like to see more of Kirks ‘Interactions’ with Mr Spock. Our resident ASStro Boobologist Vexidi also claims to have enjoyed Cpt. Kirks interactions, just not with other men.
Meanwhile TheFitLord is still lying down in sick bay and refuses to get up, mumbling to himself about being ‘Rapped by a general manager (?)’ and lamenting his childhood. Even my most cunning linguistics officer and chief of sarcasm Anachron is unable (or unwilling) to make any sense of his seemingly incoherent ramblings.

Can someone help me with alignment? I'm working on a story and I think my character is chaotic neutral; what alignment is Picard and Kirk?
In Star Trek: Insurrection Picard risked his career to help people whose rights he believed were violated, wouldn't that make him chaotic good? Most alignment charts have him listed as Neutral Good. Kirk has always seemed to be chaotic good too, am I wrong? How would you place these characters according to alignment?

Kirk is better.
Kirk as a character acts more appropriately given the situations he is in. He's a genius in a super dangerous situation, alone, and he must react and problem solve. Also, Kirk is a very nice person that is massively concerned about all of his people. He's funny, physically fit, can lead from the front, and very smart.
Pickard instantly displayed weird mental illness, in a time when mental illness is supposed to be wiped out, he does not like children. Children aren't "pets" they are humans and all people were children, so only insane people don't like children. In addition, he is extremely bland and is in the same situations as Kirk was, but he has no emotional response. As noted, he does not like people, and that is not a leader, especially given the situation. Also, he does not lead from the front as Kirk did.
A few months ago I rewatched New Generation and it was super boring!
I read the WANTED to make it boring because everyone was supposed to be super well adjusted to life. Many of the writers had trouble writing for the show due to this.
Also, I have no idea why you would have Pichard not like kids or people much. Star Trek is based on the idea that in this future, people are over mental illness and antisocial quirks.
Meanwhile, I have watched the original Star Trek MANY times and it's always good due to the acting and witty repartee.

A good leader doesn't tell people to fight, he tells them and then leads them into the fight.
That goes for any kind of conflict from verbal to physical.
It's a HUGE sign of character.

So, Pickard is a bland yuppie type who likes wine (yuppie trend) and doesn't care much for people, and will order you to go down to a planet and kill people.
Kirk is awesome, physically fit guy that know combat, is great at combat, and won't ask you to do anything he wouldn't do. So, that's like a real WWII guy and not some sheltered yuppie type of role model.
In real life, if you're ever in charge of something, get out there and do it with them. They will think you're great.

Picard is who you want working under you (following you). Kirk is who you want working over you (leading you).
