At first, my coach (a hot head from Brazil) would absolutely DESTROY anyone that wanted a shot. Like talking either humiliated to the point they scurried out of the gym or left with a limp. But then he started turning us loose on them. I was 6 months in, 155lbs, and could pick apart 9/10 people no matter the size or strength. The other 10%, I just had to get them to gas which would take a couple minutes at best, and then they would typically just give up lol.

Almost nobody in here has any room to talk, considering how few have legitimately trained or even been in a non school yard brawl. I, on the other hand, have trained and competed on the highest levels, and been in several scraps where I utilized Jiu jitsu to finish each situation.

But please, keep those arm chair quarter back opinions coming. It’s hilarious the level of cope that comes from these discussions. It’s like a tradie talking chit to an attorney for wasting money on education lol
Fair point a good rebuttal to the above video is those trained MMA figures wreckimg those football players recently.

I enjoyed training at an MMA gym whos curriculum was pretty broad. I only recently tried just BJJ.

I guess that’s why Dan Henderson, Ben Askren got wrecked by BJJ guys - who weren’t even doing leg locks at the time.

Really to be the best all around grappler, you need a combo of wrestling + bjj. Wrestling teaches takedowns, takedown defense, top positioning. Bjj teaches submissions, chokes, and ability to fight off the back.

On an even playing field where everyone knows striking, wrestling and BJJ. BJJ is the biggest waste of time. Compare BJJ base champs VS others. It isn't even close. You can dominate with 0 BJJ. but you NEED either striking and wrestling.
Dominate in what?

Not in MMA, At least not since maybe ~2007? Probably even before.

If a spreadsheet was made of every UFC champion across all weights over the last 15 years, most hold advanced rank and train extensively in BJJ

At least 4 current champions are BJJ black belts, adesanya is purple I believe, volkanovski is a brown belt.

Not only is training in BJJ a must, you must have an advanced level in it. The sprawl and brawl days of chuck liddell are over.

I noticed of all combat/marital arts gyms, BJJ gyms are filled with the most unathletic, out of shape guys of any of them.

UFC is at a true "mixed martial arts" point where the fighters have to know punching, kicking, takedowns, grappling and submissions all at a pretty high level in order to compete. Every fighter has an aspect of it that they favor, but the one-trick days of UFC have been dead for a long time. Even Royce Gracie tried to onetrick BJJ for too long, and he got his ass beaten to a pulp by a younger and more explosive NCAA wrestler who knew just enough BJJ to stop what he wanted to do. And I think that was back in the first GWB administration.

BJJ gets a chitty rep because it's a low-athleticism martial art vs say boxing or wrestling, but it's been fully integrated into MMA because it works. It doesn't work ALONE, because nothing works alone any more.

Does overtraining for sport BJJ hurt the rest of your MMA fighting proficiency? YES. DUH. It's fukking mixed martial arts. The top fighters are like 90th percentile at everything, but no one goes down the rabbit hole to become top 99.9th percentile at one discipline at the expense of everything else. The boxing in UFC is pretty rudimentary by pro standards (with apologies to Max Holloway), but anyone who goes down the boxing rabbit hole to train to a pro level is going to get taken down and choked out in the octagon. It's not about being the best at one thing, it's about being good enough at everything. And BJJ's effective enough that you have to be train to be "good enough" at it or get RNC'ed by brahs that are.

A good percentage of the guys who train at bjj are unathletic or out of shape, that’s true. I think it has more to do with there not being much in terms of sambo/wrestling gyms widely available for adults, otherwise, you would seem the same thing at those gyms.

However, the dudes who are athletic or a combo, or big and athletic, quickly start to run **** once they have technique and mat cardio down.

There are some really valid aspects to BJJ but its very flawed as well. I always preferred Judo. But due to the rules around Judo and the sport/Olympic aspect of it, there are probably even more limitations on it then BJJ in its current form.

Wrestling is the GOAT background for MMA because a good wrestler can control the fight. You can decide whether it stays standing or goes to the ground. You can wear out your opponent. You can utilize take downs and ground n pound when you wish. Etc. Its just a lot easier to win on points. At the end of the day if your against an elite striker you take him down and control him. If your against an elite BJJ guy you keep it standing or just utilize take downs then get back up before he can catch you in a submission.

Bro, but you have to admit there was a period in say 2007ish and for a few years after that where everyone and their nephew were walking around at 160 pounds with 3 months of BJJ training talking about how they could take anyone down (honestly, these were probably some of the same jokers that showed up at mma gyms thinking they could fight and got rolled by any real practitioners).

I respect that BJJ is a very technical sport and an impressive one, but things got the fuk out of hand. Tbh, there were a lot of mma arm chair guys themselves, guys who had been practicing bjj etc. a few months, but had never really been hit in the mouth. I was a bouncer back then and I can't tell you how many drunk clowns would come up to me and tell me about their mma and bjj related submission skills. And the worst of all was the "yeah, but on the ground it's game over" and it's like bro as a bouncer literally my top concerns are not getting stabbed/bottled and keeping my feet. I'd rather face 6 drunk ass holes on my feet than end up on the ground with one of them and roll the dice some clown doesn't run up and curb me.

Also, who the fuk goes around in real life sizing people up randomly and talking about their "fighting skills"? Recreational MMA practitioners.

I've never been in a pure altercation with an MMA practitioner, allegedly I did smash in a krav maga instructor but it was never confirmed whether he was or not, but I've been in more than a few backyard wrestling and boxing matches over the years with former wrestlers, etc., and while wrestlers and BJJ etc. type guys are the highest on my list of people I don't want to end up on the ground with, size advantage is absurd. Of course a 240 lb skilled BJJ practitioner would make mince meat of me and basically human pretzel me however he wanted, but having wrestled fairly accomplished guys that I had 60+ pounds of lean muscle on? If it's only for a few minutes so I can't gas, I've ragdolled them with some very basic jiu-jistu and strength.

Basically BJJ is pretty damn cool, but this myth that a 140 lb BJJ practitioner is the most dangerous man on the planet is beyond destroyed. Against a much stronger and larger athletic/flexible opponent BJJ becomes very difficult if the person also has strong balance and can't be taken down or controlled easily.

Saku beat the entire gracie family with basic wrestling. Chuck Liddell also proved that. training BJJ excessively is literal autism. diminishing returns. turns all your muscles into slowtwitch.

Y'all are having an over-simplified discussion on a very complex subject, but generally it is accepted that Type IIx and Type IIa can switch, and that a two classification system of "fast" and "slow" twitch muscles while semantically convenient really doesn't capture the dynamics of muscle fiber characteristics.

TLDR, you can absolutely train your body to be more explosive and demonstrate a heavier (or lighter) weighting towards "fast" twitch muscle characteristics based on training methods.

The thing with BJJ is that once you get to blue belt the rest of it is largely useless for MMA. You will spend years practicing how to pass and hold guard but all of that knowledge is completely useless when you can just chill on top and punch them in the face or if on bottom, just literally get up.

I just remember Cro Cop embarrassing these guys during Pride days. Telling them to stand up as they laid on their back. He just chopped them down with leg kicks and sprawl any take down attempt.

Can't stand BJJ tbh. It has some basic use in terms of submission techniques, but otherwise I it seems inferior over as a base for a fighting style for MMA. The fight starts on your feet.

Agreed, I do bjj, but weight classes exist for a reason.

Once you start getting into that 50+ pound discrepancy, size and strength, will have a major impact upon the roll.

Most martial arts are incomplete and more for the exercise side for sub-athletes.

Wrestling and boxing help mma, I suppose. Maybe some other stuff. I guess BJJ can help some ground game.

I’m inclined to agree to some degree but also disagree. Yes chit happens, I cracked ribs twice last year, dislocated a finger which I never let heal fully so it’s all crooked, and currently dealing from some knee issues from a heel hook that cranked a bit too hard.

And their is always a list of people about to or recovering from some type of surgery. Think we have like 5-6 guys out right now.

But some people also make it through with smart taps and game plans, not pushing themselves when injured and making it worse etc..

And you will never have to deal with blows to the head. If you box into your 60s sparring hard you will be a legit vegetable. With bjj you just get a hip replacement and a surgery or two!

I saw this BJJ guy once

He was a out to have a street fight and everyone went outside expecting some rocky 5 action.

Instead BJJ guy lays on his back like a bug that's been turned upside down and the other guy runs around trying to kick him lol

Ded srs wtf.
