Ya, one of the main lines filling up a 45 gallon drum with maple sap. Not everyone is aware of pipeline, most expect the standard buckets and taps, but this makes it so much faster to collect large amounts.

This will boil down into about a gallon of syrup. Guess I will be helping run the evaporator this weekend.

they are, but generally you need decent topography to get a lot on one line to make it worthwhile. It is the norm for big operations. Heck, the real big guys use vacuum pumps so you dont even need any fall, then you dont even need the help of gravity.

I know of operations that bring in tanker trucks to move sap to a reverse osmosis facility, and then to a propane evaporator!

My buddy still uses a20 cord of wood or so a year, and we collect with a bulldozer and trailer. Transfer pumps help tho.

he has a few poly one inch main lines too. When its flowing good, it will fill a barrel fast.

This is near Parry Sound Ontario.

Buddy of mine has 500 acres of sugar bush...I help him out every so often for Syrup.

I travel to upstate NY a few times a year to get away with the fam. Like you said, when the topography allows for it, you can see all of these huge setups and pipelines running down the hillsides to the collection tanks. Pretty cool.

Lol, it's worth it though, in moderation. Once in a blue moon I'll make pancakes or Belgium waffles for dinner. I'd have them every day for breakfast if they didn't make you look like a bloat-maxer.

Some of the Quebec setups are pretty massive.

My buddies setup is somewhere around 500 trees I think. Been in his family for 150 years apparently.

Is that that because it is warming up?

I vaguely remember a state park field trip as a kid (Upstate New York, Plattsburgh), and the device they hammered into the tree with a channel to drain out sap could also hold the bucket on the tree as well. This was a long time ago and memories are not reliable.

It needs the moisture removed.

It comes out like sweet water, and you boil it down till its thick and syrupy.

you boil off 40 parts water to every 1 part sap you get. So that 40 gallon drum will end up being one gallon of syrup.

Yup, thats called a spile. Holds bucket and goes into the tree. My buddy has a few hundred buckets too.

His kid put a bunch in upside down this year lol.
