Mind blown at CounterClockwise Experiment

https://www.businessinsider.com/elle...eriment-2015-4

Imagine, for a moment, living in a nursing home. Your meals are in a cafeteria, your recreation is at scheduled times, and you're surrounded by other old people, mostly strangers. You've been robbed of your autonomy, maybe even your identity - the very things that make you you may be more tied to your past than your present, and nobody expects very much of you anymore.

No matter your age, this is not an environment in which most people thrive. But Langer thought that maybe, just maybe, if you could put people in a psychologically better setting - one they would associate with a better, younger version of themselves - their bodies might follow along. "Wherever you put the mind, you're necessarily putting the body," she explained many years later, on CBS This Morning.

Eight men in their 70s stepped out of a van in front of a converted monastery in New Hampshire. They shuffled forward, a few of them arthritically stooped, a couple with canes. Then they passed through the door and entered a time warp. Perry Como crooned on a vintage radio. Ed Sullivan welcomed guests on a black-and-white TV. Everything inside - including the books on the shelves and the magazines lying around - were designed to conjure 1959.
The men didn't just reminisce about what things were like at that time. A control group did that. They were instructed to behave as if it were actually 1959, while the control group lived in a similar environment but didn't act as if it were decades ago.

They discussed historical events as if they were current news, and no provisions were made that acknowledged the men's weakened physical state; no one carried their bags or helped them up the stairs or treated them like they were old.

"Nothing - no mirrors, no modern-day clothing, no photos except portraits of their much younger selves spoiled the illusion that they had shaken off 22 years," Grierson wrote.

A week later, both the control group and the experimental group showed improvements in "physical strength, manual dexterity, gait, posture, perception, memory, cognition, taste sensitivity, hearing, and vision," Langer wrote in "Counterclockwise."

And according to Langer's account, most of those improvements were much more significant in the group told to live as if it were actually 1959, a full 63 percent of them had better intelligence test scores at the end of the experiment than they did at the beginning, compared to 44 percent in the control group. Four independent volunteers, who knew nothing about the study, looked at before and after photos of the men in the experimental group and perceived those in the "after" photos as an average of two years younger than those in the "before."

On the last day of the study, Langer wrote, men "who had seemed so frail" just days before ended up playing "an impromptu touch football game on the front lawn."

In some ways, the results should not be surprising. Grierson writes that Langer actually said to the participants, "we have good reason to believe that if you are successful at this, you will feel as you did in 1959."
When you believe that something will affect you in a particular way, it often does. That's why placebo controls are baked into every rigorous clinical trial.

Your own expectations, and the expectations of others, are powerful. And expectations of the declining cognitive and physical abilities that come with age are pervasive.

Positive crew validated again. Just lol at negativecels.

Didn't read but I feel as though people treat older people as senile and disgusting burdenful trash just because they grew up in different times and I think it affects them SRS.

Agreed, What gets me is I was always told I was not an adult or I was just a child so basically I couldn't understand and what I thought didn't matter and would basically get AGEMOGGGED and I thought one day I would finally start getting the respect and recognition I deserve just to come to the realization that it was well intentioned oppression due to insecurity as for the old age portion my mom always AGEMOGGGS my grandma with straight put downs talking about how weak she is and how she can't lift anything etc and it rustles me hard as fook like how would you feel if that is how you're talked to everyday SRS.

Definitely to a large extent in the West and it sucks. In the East they have more reverence for the elderly. And for a long time now Iโ€™ve been convinced that brushing off the elderly is one of the things accelerating the decline of society. So much knowledge and wisdom is lost because we think we know better, yet look at our society now.

And perhaps even worse than that, is how we greatly delay the development of children because of so many helicopter parents who freak out protect/correct them every step along the path. Really we should be pushing them to mastery, not shunting their growth by helping them do everything or telling them they canโ€™t do things.

Imagine going to a party, seeing a group of people talking, you walk up, hear the last part of what someone said, and then just inject your opinion. Just imagine.

100% correct. LOL at boomers who toss their parents into a nursing home and forget about them, barely see them a few times a year, and then also raise their kids by throwing a phone and ipad at them and send them to school to be raised by liberal lunatics while they work and live a selfish life.

It really is disgusting how people treat their parents now once they get older. I already told my parents they are living with me when they can't live on their own anymore or at a certain point. I will have a lot of land and we'll build them a house on it.

Then they can live the rest of their lives close to family, having a purpose by being with family and their grandkids, and being a part of a group and not isolated and lonely and being treated like they are leeches.

Society's main sickness is a spiritual one.

True. I knew all 4 of my grandparents, and one set were basically like second parents for me. Definitely didn't suffer from helicopter parenting. I've actually read that Gen X were "the lease parented generation" and I believe it. Some good and some bad came of that.

How weird is it that now 80s music is on the oldies station?
It is odd that the latch key kids and least parented generation turned around and drastically over-parented their children, almost to the point of handicapping them in many cases. I guess there is good and bad to both sides, I just wish we could get back to a good balance when it comes to parenting.

And yeah, when I heard Guns & Roses and Pearl Jam on a classic rock station it kind of hit me.
