"Go into these fields if you are not a people's person" - worst advice ever [srs]

You need to be a people's person in anything all the time to achieve anything more than mediocre - in career/relationships/everything else.

If you are naturally passive you need to force yourself out of it before other people's social DNA ousts you.

Yes, it matters less in some fields like software development, engineering, accounting etc. But riding to the echelons depends on blubbering like a politician and keeping a profile unless you are satisfied earning 50 000 USD forever as a network admin in a dark room.

The "field" where one gains power and ways to enrich oneself whilst bringing skills worth dick to society - politics - is literally determined by said people skills.

I am leaving a software development role for a business analyst role and I already appear more valuable already due to higher visibility. More promotions and more money.

The cognitive effort I put in before while solving technical issues as a developer was around 5 times more. srs

Another skill that you need to learn is sales

I remember looking down on sales brahs in college. I’ll be an analytical finance bro, and leave the sales to idiots. Had a huge ego and thought I knew everything back then lol but sales is tied to almost every job.

Even if you aren’t selling to clients you will have to sell yourself to companies, sell your ideas to your boss, sell the value you or your team brings to management, etc etc

If you aren’t selling something then you aren’t goin anywhere

yes, the ability to present anything, be it your skill or product, "sales" skill is also important.

not to mention that every company depends on sales people

writing a good piece of software means dick without clients/sales

The biggest lie is that accounting and IT are suitable careers for introverts, they're not.

Finance and IT are 90% dealing with people.

All the jobs where you dont have to deal with people are being eliminated via automation.
Everything I post is satire.

It’s such bad advice. “You’re bad at something so don’t do it”.

Hit that sht head on and you’ll get over it and grow as a human. People are just soft and don’t like bing briefly uncomfortable.

Went into finance as an introvert thinking it wouldn’t be a problem

Everyone here is right. Outside of entry level or senior analyst associate type roles you need people skills. Sales, management, etc

I'm just not wired for extended social interactions, they drain the fuk out of my energy and I doubt that will ever change, nor do I want it to change. With that said, I have good social skills and still work on them daily because of how important they are to success. I'm lucky my dad taught me that.

Good point OP.

Even if you pick a low-social job, say SWE, where the average social skills are 3/10, what happens if you come in with just 5/10 social skills - you're better than everyone around you and more likely to ascend them. You're mogging your competition with that slight edge.

Gotta pick a field where you have an edge above the average person in that field.

Would like to know more about how you entered as a business analyst? I'm going into SWE this year, not sure if it's a long term play. I like technical work, but I also want a job that's going to make me a better all round person.

Sales is a great career for personal development, but it's not technical enough for me and I feel that would be a waste.
