my old boss at a city job was an absolute prick killed my ambition 100% I was showing up right at 6 when I used to arrive 30 minutes early for 3 years denied me 2 promotions yet gave them to lazy fuks so I stopped trying 100% by that point, just do the bare minimum and go home. The day he started the work place was doomed, But him being an absolute douche pushed me to find something better and landed working at a college for the state and the starting pay was a 25% pay raise lmao

You have to ask yourself WHERE that ambition came from.
If it comes from impressing other people, your fire will fade.
If it is something you truly want to do, you will keep at it

Never was an overly ambitious person to begin with but I kind of fell into a high paying career and just did my best.
After a while I realized that free time and low stress are infinitely more important than career goals and money. My personal goals just shifted to want a different kind of lifestyle.
Now I feel sorry for high earning high stress busy career women srs. It’s not a good life. The important things in life are not at your job.

I don't doubt many people thrive in those high stress jobs, but I think for most, a healthy work-life balance is more important.

My ambitions were truly from within though, never cared about impressing anyone, which is why I'm conflicted.

Also, having idealized impressions of what said higher up job would be like can cause burn out.
Ex. I thought high level science jobs would be using my knowledge and brain more.

-Was on "Project Manager" path
-New Director brought in, pushed me to the side
-Corporate asked me to move to another project to continue on path
-Moved 1.5 hours away to new project and was put on another "PM Role Path"
-Director on that project resigned and they brought in an outside hire
-Was a complete *******....restructured whole project
-Demoted me and told me that it was for my "10 year plan" benefit.
-Brought in an outside hire (that he used to work with) to be his Assistant PM
It completely changed my outlook on career....lost drive, completely.... literally did the bare minimum..... I moved to that project on "temporary assignment" terms that were supposed to be 8-12 months and was there for almost 3 years. I ended up resigning and moved out of the country 4 months later. That was almost 3 years ago. I moved back to the same area about 8 months ago and the company called me 2 weeks ago to offer the before mentioned position because the guy they hired used it as a step up and left 2 years in. I told them what I make now and what it would take to get me back and the Director about crapped....(more than double what I was making when I left)
The company was relatively small overall and wasn't very good at managing their people and it seemed like at every turn I was shat on or made to feel like the apple was dangling just in front of me and "if you just do this 1 thing more" you'll be good to go. They always presented people with "opportunity" and it was up to you to do something with it. I know a few other guys that were in the same situation and ended up leaving. A buddy of mine still works for them and says they are still struggling to hold on to good managers/directors.

Once It really "hit me" that the most valuable resources in life can't be bought with money...
I will say I never really had a "ton" of professional ambition. And luckily I am not a financially stressed person. But once I realized Time, Health, and Relationships can't be bought with money (to some extent) I lost every ounce of will power to suck corporate dick. I definitely blame "the system" as it is not very rewarding unless you are the CEO of your own business, while also allowing for IT positions like mine to exist. I imagine I am here as a "just in case" kind of thing. So my current goal is to do the LEAST amount of work required to keep my job happy, which is like 2-3 hours of work a week, even though I'm paid for 40. And will continue to do that and put fourth the rest of my effort in the other 3/4 of my day.

When you're developing software, you're developing it with an end user in mind. That means you're constantly having to work with people to understand the type of interface they want and also the functionalities that they want - and the frustrating aspect is that most people are too low IQ to be able to articulate what it is that they're looking for in the end product. Of course, they'll vent their anger out on the developer instead of comprehending that they couldn't articulate what they wanted.
Also, to be a successful software engineer you'd have to know more than just coding. Let's take for example a software engineer that's designing an inventory management system. The developer would have to have at least a basic level of understanding of inventory management and also a basic understanding of accounting as well.
So the reality is that a software engineer would have to understand coding + inventory/accounting + social skills.....
Hate to rain on your parade bro, but I'm just trying to illustrate the harsh reality, it's very difficult to find a decent paying job where you don't have to deal with people.
The only job that I can think of where you don't have to deal with people is a truck driver.

Dealing with people is truly exhausting and soul-crushing. Sometimes I would say it's worse than being in high school because I'm dealing with 40 year olds that throw tantrums like a high school kid.

Yea. I did mention you'd have to still coordinate with people. I think it matters most what industry you're working in.

Yeah I was actually surprised at how prevalent this is in large organizations and the red tape that comes with it. Some people are naturals at it though, do you regret it?
Somewhat. I still hang out with a lot of people from the old company and sometimes miss the lunches/happy hours😢HTC 4 Life: Face first tongue out!

I wanted to be a Chartered Accountant and climb the corporate ladder but it's bs for minorities
Then I switched to be a gym teacher but was too depressed so dropped out.
Now all I want to be is a sparky, last job paid me 25/hr so I'm getting closer and closer to that goal.

Do not expect purity. I think I read a stat saying virtually 100% of women becoming physicians were sexually assaulted. They're not kinder to men. Maybe feel pleased about the fact you've secured a permanent job.
I'm just saying a stable external motivation really helps, and I think something along the lines of religion/family tend to fit most consistently, even though they're not necessarily logical.

good posts misc.
for me it was two DUIs in two weeks and losing my license and motorcycle which was my favorite thing in the world. so the underlying problem was alcoholism and drug abuse. i was rebuilding my life and performing well but eating ******** for breakfast, drinking vodka for dinner, working my ass off and spending no time doing what i love was a recipe for on-the-job suicide attempt. i went to rehab 4 mar 20 and was clean for 10 months, drank again and caught felony charges within weeks which i'm currently facing.
my advice is prioritize your mental and emotional health if you expect long-term success in anything you pursue

When i clocked onto it doesn't matter how hard you work, or if you genuinely want the company improve. It all comes down to who is friends with managers ect, which the clique you are part off.

Being frugal, and having a net worth of almost a decade of living expenses saved up.
Makes it pretty hard to give a fuk.
Edit: I've had single day swings, (up or down) in my stonk portfolio the equivalent to 3 months wages.
Just lmao.
