Material prices: Tradies on suicide watch...

Just called my supplier.


A sheet of 3/4" plywood is retailing for $107.99 Canadian. Used to be about $40.00.


Building material prices are at least doubled. At least I make more on markup I guess...

I work in an adjacent supply industry there are constant increases on metals and plastics. Everything is rapidly becoming more expensive.

We redid our roof last year and the roofer charged us $20 USD, INSTALLED.

^^^plastics are reaching a critical point because the resin supply died in the Texas storm. Back up and running now but we are just now getting to the gap from when the raw material shortage happened to supplies of things like HDPE pipe.

The storm that wiped out the petrochemical plants in Texas flattened polyethelne production, most resin suppliers have called force majeure on their supply contracts.

If you need poly pipe, sheeting, geotextile fabrics or anything like that I have some bad news for you.

but like, at a super accelerated rate. Like, not years, or even a monthly change, its weekly and daily price increases.

All my quotes are null and void. People cancelling projects left and right , which is fine for us now because we are booked till 2022, but man. its crazy.

Correct, generally in the industries Iwholesale you would get a yearly adjustment or for some suppliers once every 2-3 years. We're now seeing multiple adjustments inside a year. The commodity items are basically constantly moving with quotes only being valid for 1-2 days if that.

this is true for the most part, but I have people cancelling and pushing off whole projects.

This is actually good here because anyone who is good is booked solid and cant find enough workers. I would hire five carpenters right now if there were any available. And i already have 17 guys on the crew.

Good info on poly pipe. Brb, buying my suppliers out...

I also occasionally build toboggans and sleighs for winter camping, etc. Will remember to not sell any old ones because the UHMW and HDPE I use will likely be crazy or unavailable.

Paid $68 for a 4 x 8' 5/8" plywood in Alberta.

I am not even a tradie just a DIY and it's insane how expensive everything is becoming meanwhile wages stay the same or continue to drop.

I'm a civil engineering consultant. HDPE just passed RCP in price here in South Carolina lol. Speaking of suicide watch, my friend the HDPE sales rep in SC lol...

I am doing ICF, so hopefully conccrete and foam doesnt go up. It shouldnt...

But i still need walls and subfloor, and roof material.


Metal studs arent any better. My steel tube dock fabricator just told me steel went up 100%.

Copper pipe too, scrap prices are so high junkies are killing themselves here trying to steal copper lines out of live substations.

thats fkin nuts. I have a 30' sailboat in my yard that I was going to sell. Its not worth too much, so might be worthwhile to scrap the boat, pull the lead keel out of it and sell that.

I know a place that used to give 70c a lb for lead, but might be double that now.

I enjoy woodworking as a hobby and the prices are getting stupid, plus Im not very good so half my chit become scrap.....expensive scrap

Not only are the prices not coming down anytime soon, they will never be as low as they were before.

Although last march coming back from florida was a welcome change in gas prices.

Was crazy cheap on the way home. I see that isnt happening this year..

Whats weird is I saw 3/4 hardwood plywood at HD last week for 57 bucks, which is only 2 dollars higher than normal. (Although OSB and other typically cheaper sheets were MUCH more expensive)

Built a bed frame a few months ago......what I had originally priced out to be around $300 (a while back) turned out to over $600 when I finally got everything.

Currently redoing out 6' privacy fence around .7 acres.....FML. Plans to build a deck before summer........there goes my bonus.

In-Laws are redoing the siding on their ranch with Board & Batton.......bought about 1/2 of what they need with what they originally budgeted for the project months ago.

We are building a house right now and are very lucky we got in at the contracted price before lumber shot through the roof. If we were to buy today, same house is $24,000 more.

Last year it was pressure treated lumber. My yard closed off to retail, an only supplied us contractors.

It was crazy. No one except a few of us could get any PT lumber, and for us it was only because my guy called and i reserved a dozen or so lifts.
