Realistically, how many college students cheat on exams?

???

At my last school it was rampant as the professors didn't really care since most students weren't staying in the US, srs. Coincidentally, the material was extremely hard because that was their way of combatting the cheating....but it only lead to more cheating.

What's everyone else's experience with this?

it is rampant

schools need to take cheating WAY more seriously in freshmen/sophomore classes

not being able to do a simple derivative(power rule for example) but getting into med school should turn heads

I tutored kids that wanted to be "doctors" that were dumb as ****ing rocks

I pray to god everyday they didn't make it, gonna kill somones mother one day

I don't think I ever cheated on any tests, or knew of anyone who cheated. This was a short while ago though. And at a public university for whatever that's worth.

I'd say about ~10% of students are doing something sketchy on tests. Only a few get caught and most of the time its not worth it to pursue punishment. No professor has time to fill out paperwork for this sorta chit and TA's don't get paid enough to worry about it either lol.

The real way you deal with this is by making the exams open book and making the questions more open-ended. From there you curve the grading based on the best/worst quality answers.

Depends on the university. The one I went to was so ****ing liberal that it decided to do nothing when one guy was caught. One of our professors put together a big ass binder with countless examples of his cheating and the higher ups decided to let him graduate. EVERYONE knew he cheated. The professor that put the binder together was so mad that he left to go to a different university.

Hell, you can get caught red handed doing drugs in the dorms and face zero punishment at some of them.

I took several months to relearn all of English on my own, which helped me to become a really good researcher. So all things English is easy for me. The associates is really just to have proof. The time spent in school is really for other areas.

I mean my friends and I share ideas and answers for assignments and essays. My writing is on another planet compared to my peers so I'm not worried about copying.

I don't know anybody that cheats on exams. A level student who surrounds himself with other hard workers though so who knows.

From what I saw, about 15-40% cheated. It depended on the prof/invigilators and difficulty of the class.

With online tests via zoom, I would estimate that number jumped to 50-70%.

It kind of pissed me off, but I believe it's pretty obvious to interviewers when people don't know the basics.

edit: This is talking tests. Assignments probably 90%+ cheated in some way or another.

to be honest I don't have problems with students cheating on assignments for ENGINEERING, usually the homework final grade weight is very low

some of the assignments were absolutely ungodly and were impossible to do without some form of assistance(control systems and modeling!)

if a student in engineering can pass the exams without cheating I see no issue with it, usually the difficulty of the exams is suffice in my experience

Don't see how one cheats in an humanities degree unless you're sneaking in a flash card with important dates or authors on them to include on a test.


But I can definitely see rampant cheating in any STEM degree that requires a lot of route memorization formulas.

I’m convinced that most people with degrees are just as dumb as most people without degrees. Many have to cheat, because with their own intelligence and determination alone they’ll fail.

But you also have a problem of Professors making $100K but they can't even make their own test questions. Like they just reuse tests they found online or worse yet from the teacher's edition of a class book but that any student can find these days.


Some of the most infamous examples is some publishers actually publish "test bank" books to help students study but some Professors literally rip their questions out of those books.

Stem major and most of my courses literally have ~85% averages going into finals

Can’t cheat with other people on quizzes/tests cus of how they order the questions/can’t go backwards, but it’s been a joke for about all my classes with google and looking at notes

Yeah I was stubborn for a long time and wouldn't look at answer keys for homework. Some questions are extremely ambiguous though and there can be a big disconnect between what the prof teaches vs. what is on an assignment.

I'd spend literally 4-8 hours on a problem that was never touched on in tests (so only worth like 0.1% of the course), eventually said **** it and would try myself at first before using the key to check my work.

Also some TAs are lazy and if your method for solving a problem isn't the same as their answer key, they don't look into your solution and you can lose 50-100% of the marks even if your work is correct.

Only the C students cheated in my engineering courses and don’t remember any physics students doing it (not sure how they could, no calculator and left all answers as variables and big fractions.

Get exam questions from previous students (test banks reused).
A lot of past papers are available so students can study them in preparation for exams. Maybe it's different in America. There isn't any sort of stigma attached to using previous years exams to prepare.

The people in charge of exams watch the students like hawks so it isn't really possible to do so here. Maybe in class tests or exams but not for any of the large exams with a large number of students.

Except that these test banks were for in-house use only and access was strictly prohibited to students.

AKA another case where professors are paid $200k+ yet are too lazy to write new exam questions.

This is what I remember when I was in school.

Our classes had a lot of homework and projects, and it would be really easy to cheat on them. I don't just mean looking up answers, but even just working in groups when its supposed to be individual work (usually in such a group there's at least one person thats basically copying answers).

But the funny thing is that these homeworks/projects are only a small % of your grade. And its much harder to cheat on an exam. So ultimately I think it hurt more people than it helped.

And as someone that sometimes interviews recent CS grads, you can tell the people who cheated their way through from a mile away. Lots of people graduate a 4 year accredited CS program, and can't code a for loop. Ded fukn srs


Jokes on them when they spent tens of thousands and several years on their degree and can't get a relevant job.
