Both.
5.56 is lighter so can carry more ammo, and the rifles tend to be lighter. So would grab my mk18, until I can get an SR-15.
If I wanted 7.62 I'd grab either my SCAR or HK.
If I was gonna have to be on the move I'm grabbing the 5.56. If I was gonna be posted up in a window defending a house I'd probably grab the 7.62.

If I'm by myself, 5.56 AR. Part of a team? 7.62x51.
x51 rifles themselves tend to be heavier, and intended to shoot further.

5.56. It's better at pretty much everything. Terminal ballistics of 5.56 ball in CQ are equal or better to 7.62 expanding rounds. Lighter. More capacity.

But aside from that ammo supply, weight, ballistics of 556, and ease of movement on a 10.5" barrel. Less recoil means more rounds on target faster.

i think the reason was the improved ballistics of the heavier .308 round were not enough to offset the fact that the soldier would be able to carry about double the amount of .223 ammunition into battle
also fighting in the jungle (which was pretty much the environment for which the m-16/ar-15 was designed) would mean that combatants would be engaging each other at less than 100 yards so the light .223 round would not have a problem cutting through some brush and still delivering a kill shot

your average .223 fmj slug weighs 50 grains, maybe a bit less just for the sake of simplicity. 45 grains =3 grams per slug
.308 fmj weighs 180 grains=12 grams
15 grains per gram
muzzel velocity of a .223 is what 4000 fps or about 1300 m/sec
muzzel velocity of a .308 is 2870 fps about 930 m/sec
formula for kinetic energy is E(k)=m(kg)/2 x (v(m/s))^2
kinetic energy of .223 is E(k)=.0015(1300)^2= 2,500joules
kinetic energy of .308 is E(K)=.006(930)^2=5,189
so the 7.62x51mm has double the kinetic energy
the formula for momentum i p=mv, which is just mass times velocity
for the .223 =.003(1300)=3.9 (kg.m)/sec
for the .308 = .012(930)=11.16
more momentum and more kinetic energy, at the cost of weight and ammunition
.308 fmj weighs 180 grains=12 grams
15 grains per gram

Because unless you jump through massive hoops, you are going to be semi-auto, go for the 7.62x51. The reason for the 5.56 is recoil control in auto mode and being able to carry large amounts of ammo because you are using a lot. Not likely to happen even in a SHTF situation or civil war. Follow up shots with the 5.56 will be easier but the thump comming from the larger rounds makes it a no brainer.
Now there is a 6.8SPC, 6.5 as well that is a good middle of the road. Also variants like the 300BLK. So many options with the same AR15 platform. I think you can even get .308/762x51 in the smaller AR15 platform but the AR-10 platform isn't that much bigger. Held a AR10 once with options and it was just like a AR15 but a little bigger around the base.
