Hit the local trout stream over the weekend. The first 3 hours I didnt even get a bite throwing various color streamers, wooly bugs, clouser minnows, and san juan worms. Nothing.

I tied on a red midge to drift through the rapids and caught 6 in about 30 minutes lol.

Our trout season is closed here, but mirin them browns.

Haven't been able to fish the past few weekends. Last two weekends has been 20-30 MPH wind and sometimes rain, too. Both days, both weekends. Wish it would cool off to get some ice. I want to catch some perch.

Didn't get to go out as much this year as usual but here are my best fish of the year

The trout doesn't look all that impressive but it is a greenback cutthroat which only gets to 18" and is critically threatened, so not easy to catch big ones. I know a spot that has a bunch though, that's not even the biggest I caught that day but the only one I got a picture of.

Trout was caught in the Eagles Nest wilderness outside of Keystone, Colorado. It's in a spot about 9 miles out and at 11,400 ft of altitude. One of the last places you can find wild greenbacks. I try to make at least 1 trip to that lake a year, nobody really goes that far out to fish so it's loaded with monsters.

Do it!!!!!!!!!!! My dad took me fishing with friends of his when I was pretty young (not 3.5 though). He wasn't then nor is he now interested in fishing. I on the other hand have been an avid fisherman ever since! It's just in my DNA. He bought us a boat when I was still in elementary school. I've had a boat ever since although the boats have changed over the years. I'm fortunate enough to have a man made lake right across the street from where I live. I fish there often and take my boat out at least a couple times per month depending on the time of the year. My whole point is, I was introduced to fishing and it stuck! I try to introduce things to my girls and let the chips fall where they may. Your son may not end up loving fishing just as I didn't fall in love with my dads sport (tennis) but he gave me the opportunity and I will always be grateful!

Don't know much about saltwater fishing but that doesn't look like a great choice for a fishing boat in general. You want a more open concept that's stable when you're standing up. You hook a big fish and you want to be able to walk around as the fish will be in more control of you than the other way around until it tires from fighting.

Also just looks like it would be cluttered with gear making it unsafe from a tripping hazard POV. How far out do you plan on going? How big of a motor can it handle? The weather can start off calm and turn on you in a hurry to where you need to haul ass to safely as fast as possible. Will you be fishing by yourself most of the time? I fish alone most of the time and safety when on the water is 100% THE number one concern for me as if something happens and there's no one around you'll have to save yourself. That's why I where a life jacket from the time I get in my boat to the time I get out. Personally I wouldn't rush into this decision if I were you.

all fair points, and things Ive asked myself. As far as the space goes, I can remove a "seat" so that I have more space.

- Likely 5-10ish miles out and mostly solo. Safety is priority #1 as well, so I would put money in the works with a life jacket, comms, personal weather minimums, etc..

- It can take up to a 15HP motor. I was thinking a tohatsu 9.8

I appreciate your thoughts on this issue, I'm stopping myself from making it an impulse purchase. It's either this, a zodiac/stryker (more popular brand) or a top of the line kayak for me at this point but I'm not rushing it.

Then it's not even a choice man. Take the boat with the motor all day everyday. You won't regret it over having to paddle around and in the event of unexpected bad weather you'll be thanking your lucky stars you're not trying to row back.

The thing about the weather is when you're out there on a perfect day and the fish are biting you're always looking at the best case scenario to justify staying out longer. Brb 30% chance of thunderstorms, no problem. Except when that 30% actually happens and you start shhitting your pants. Trust me there's no more vulnerable feeling than lightning cracking all around you while you can barely see through the rain knowing you've still got miles to go. Been there too many times to count. And we're talking lakes not the ocean which is just a whole other animal on orders of magnitude.

And 10 miles out is no joke either in a small boat. Get the most horsepower you can afford for the boat's rating.

Where would you be fishing out of? What coastline? Depends on your proximity to deep water. There's a guy on Youtube that I follow and he fishes offshore in a Yak (look up Glenn Maddon). He fishes off the middle to lower texas coast so once he's a mile or 2 out it's plenty deep for some species that make their way down the coast during the summer months. I fish the upper Texas coast so 20 miles out barely gets me in 60' of water! You could probably pull it off off the Florida Gulf coast as well. I'm too lazy to paddle so I have no opinion on Yaks. I fish out of a bay boat so when I do break the jetty's it's on a CALM day and I know full well things can go to chit in a hurry! JD speaks the truth about the conditions changing in a hurry, especially during the summer months!

I was going to suggest he talk to people who actually do the type of fishing he's planning on doing in the places he's planning to go for the best advice. I just know for any type of serious bass fishing, a boat like that would be so frustrating you'd probably only use it a few times before giving up on it completely.

Serious Bass fishing and a "boat like that" shouldn't ever be mentioned in the same conversation! LOL! If your Bass boat doesn't cruise at a cool 85+ mph and have two 36 volt Lithium Pro batteries for the 112lb thrust Ulterra and 15 rods laying on the deck then you aren't really serious!

I did manage a quick trip to the lake across the street right before dark today. Bumped a little shallow diving square bill crankbait (crawfish pattern) along the bottom and picked up 3 pickles. Didn't bother taking a pic because all 3/4-1 pounders look the same!

I finally got to spend some time in the water over the weekend. Did spin fishing Saturday and threw some flies on Sunday.

Here are a couple of the better ones.

It might have been my first time throwing the Whopper Plopper on the river and - oh man- that is a lot of fun. Fish strike those things with so much hostility and anger.

Caught a ton of trout since season opened. Went today and got 4 and had 2 spit the hook, but had a ton of follows and quick strikes. Water is low and clear so they spooked easily.

Went on a saltwater charter today - got seasick unfortunatel. Not sure if any brahs here have tips for beating seasickness?

I caught a very solid cod - but it isn’t permitted by my state to keep them currently so back into the drink it went. SMH.

Haddock were scarce but we did bring a few home.

Are there any advantages with baitcaster vs spinning?

Baitcaster allows for far better cast control and precision as you can thumb the spool during the cast. Spinning reels have a much easier learning curve. The main advantages to spinning reels is they typically have smoother drags and if you're fishing deep you can get your bait down a bit quicker as there's less friction/resistance. They can also handle lighter baits better for this reason.

I just bought my first bait caster a few weeks ago and I love how smooth and accurate I can cast with it. I caught 3 bass first time out. It took me this long to try it because people spooked me by talking about how easy it is the birds nest. And sure enough, I bird nested the first few casts until I figured out the tension and thumb feathering. Then it was smooth sailing. People still use spinning rods in fresh water for drop shotting technique.

went last week to Hyannis Mass on a saltwater charter with a few friends. this was my first time on this trip with them, they go every year, so I decided to see what the hype was all about.
they brought 12 100Qt coolers and we filled everyone of them up with sea bass, perogies and a few other fish
best trip I've ever been on
