Why is the 3rd game in the series almost always the best?

Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)
Metroid 3 (SNES)
Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES)
Resident Evil 3 (PS1)
Mega Man X3 (SNES)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
GTA: San Andreas (3rd of the fully 3d GTAs)

RE2 and RE3 are close, but RE3 gets the edge because of the atmosphere, live choice system, raccoon city and Nemesis. JFL at the other two comparisons.

You forgot Tekken 3. Although there's been so many sequels you could argue it could be surpassed, but it was the best of the playstation trilogy and huge leap forward.

Yeah there's tons more examples. Mortal Kombat 3 was the best of the early games as well.

Dragon Age Inq. (better than 2, but the OG is still best)
Mass Effect 3
Max Payne 3 (OG is the best)
Bioshock Infinite (again, OG version was just stronger)
Borderlands Pre-Sequel
Batman Arkham Origins (first two were stronger)
Gears of War 3 (I was say that Gears 2 was the best story and 4 the best MP)
RE 2 trumps RE 3 (in terms of origional 90s versions)
