If you are bored with software development or real engineering, do this srs

Sup, bros. Wanted to do some career threads for improvement. I got mad frustrated with software development and I think it is similar in real engineering (electrical etc).

In a nutshell:

- Software development jobs can be fun but only if it is agreenfield project- where you get involved in the design/mental models and the whole pipeline of activities. Big Tech or not, I believe 70% of jobs 70% of the time are not like this but instead tech migrations, configs and established huge codebases.

- There are many specialities such as Cyber Security, Mobile Software Dev but you can only qualify for a limited at a time. Even if you sacrifice personal time for learning Mobile Dev as a Web dev worker - jobs will wantthatexperience on previous jobs.

You can try switching into some other good esteem & socioeconomics career paths, categorised in:

1) Within the industry

- If you want to remain technical - you can try Data Science - a bit fresher supposedly with good potential but can suffer from the same problems.

- Switch to the business side - Business Analyst (that gets promoted to Product Manager) -I did this 2 months ago and I like it much more. Much more visibility for promotions for less work. Surface level stuff with more strategy but my deep technical understanding helps me more than business admin degree guys.

2) Outside the industry, low further education resistance

- Management Consulting

- Finance - but only IB, PE etc. Corporate Finance in Fortunes seems a bit dull, unstructured and varies a lot from department/company to department/company.

- Sales - Engineering/Software background can somewhat help to break into Software/Device sales but you are still changing industry to sales, which is a different skill set.

3) Outside the industry, high further education resistance

- Medicine

- Law

Education requirements and job characteristics of both are well-known.

I am looking into furthering myself in 1) as I have almost made a complete switch but also looking/interviewing into 2).

For both, extra educational stuff that I believe are optimal on top of my BSc in Computer Science is: MBA/MIM, Masters in Finance.

Engineers with social skills can go into product marketing or product line manager or something similar. It's technical enough that you should have an engineering background, but it's a cushy 9-5 life compared to the 60+ hour weeks engineers often work. It's probably more money too.

Young engineers in silicon valley rarely work as few as 40 hours a week. 50 a week is probably more normal and if you have critical deadlines approaching, another 10 on weekends is normal too. One of the reason so many of those big companies have "fun" workplace environments and free food and all those other benefits is they don't want their workers to go home. The longer they stick around and put in hours, the less the cost per hour since they're all on salary. Single incels don't need evenings and weekends free anyway. ********, Google, etc. will notice if you're only working your agreed to 40 hours a week. It'll affect your future there.

Isn't this exactly what I said but in the Computer Science realm? I did exactly that.

You can do it even early on through Product Mgmt internships and Business Analyst roles that mirror Software Engineer.

What bothers me about my job is not only the pay ceiling, but there's no bonus, pretty bad 401k match, no travel, bunch of boomers or incels to work with, etc. fully remote so I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

Sick of working solo with no hot chicks or normal bros or travel to sweet cities or fancy dinners with nice bonuses, overtime, company stock, etc
$110k is entry level? That's more like mid-tier. And at my company, that's closer to the top before you have to go into management to make more. Nobody is gonna pay you six figures to chit out code if you haven't proven you know what you're doing.

The GOAT path is:

Software Engineer => IT Manager

Work is 100x easier and you get paid megabank.

I went this route with a bachelors and 11 years heavy experience(was a sr. software engineer before this job). Could probably do it quicker if you had some form of masters in IT or business.

Need to have serious architecture chops in most places to be in that position though. The interviews are also grueling.

Data Science is 80% statistics, 20% programming. The coding part of it is super super simple. Most just copy paste and have taken maybe 1 programming class. Good luck getting a good data science job without a phd or msc in data science or statistics.

You're much better suited to move into data engineering.. which might be what you thought was data science (lots of people get them confused)

Systems engineer here. Yeah, being a dev seems like a chit job. I get to have similar satisfaction as them, but much more flexible work. Get to work on whatever I want like 30% of the time.

I've been researching what masters to pursue. I got my undergrad in computer science, and I've tried several times since 2008 to start a masters in CS but to no avail. At this point, I haven't used any of the maths I had to take to get my bachelors in the first place so they are for sure too weak for me to try and get the masters in CS again unless I did remedial math for a while.

My undergrad school offers a masters in information systems, though. Can be done entirely online too. They have a specialization in cybersecurity, which would be beneficial at my company because they're looking for cybersecurity people. Unfortunately, cybersecurity sounds boring AF to me. But from a job security point of view, cybersecurity seems to be the way to go.

There's another school here that offers a masters in "applied computer science". Basically, it's computer science only without the heavy theoretical computer science bullchit (i.e. not as much math required). They have a specialization in databases, which have always been interesting to me. And it can be done entirely online.

So the MSIS /w specialization in Cybersecurity would be better for me professionally. But it's highly likely I won't enjoy it.

The MS in Applied CS /w specialization in Databases would be more interesting to me. But it's more likely it won't help me professionally. At least, not as much as the cybersecurity degree.

Dunno what to do. I wanna start when my wife starts her masters, which won't be until next year so I still have some time to do more research.

Or switch to a different profession entirely. My Bachelor’s is in computer science, now working towards my Doctorate in Dental Medicine 🙂

Obviously not for everyone, but dentistry to me is so much more interesting and involved than software engineering ever was. One of the best decisions I’ve made (so far)

That is why I mentioned that if I wanted to do Data Science specialisation first thing I would do is a Masters in Math/Stat or DS.

Data engineering is software engineering btw. I don't care what anyone says. It is patching data gathering/processing solutions to data science models. And the input of data is always some software user input - so it is heavily software engineering.

Don't be confused I understand everything quite well.
