When it comes to video games and this is something the

younger players probably wont get but when it comes to video games are the days of looking to the next gen for better graphics over?

such as when it was the 8 bit era you would read a mag and be all hyped for the next gen games..then when 16 bit hit you would read EGM and get a glimpse of what 32 bit/64 bit etc would be like and you had something to look forward to for years at a time.

jumping from n64 and psx to dreamcast was the last time i actually looked at the graphics difference and said wow.

Coming from where gaming is now. if you think about it what is next to really look forward to graphically?

video games almost dont even feel like video games anymore they are almost like playing through a movie

Yeah but now we can look forward to new microtransactions available in the online story every week for the same game we've been playing for the past 10 years

There's still progress to be made, graphics are nowhere near perfect yet. There are textures developers have a very very hard time getting right like water for example. Plenty of high end games have trash looking water as well as other textures. Some of the shapes still need smoothing aswell, and faces while much improved can still look a bit like a polygon where you can see the edges.

Also, we'll see things like resolution and framerate increase with more power, which improves the graphics in some sense. Playing the same game at 4k 60fps, if you have the right setup will look a lot better than at 1080p 30fs.

I'd agree the rate of increase is slowing down but that's just how it always is with everything, but there's definitely still new ground to cover graphically IMO.

Yeah, not even a question... There literally won't be an end, it will get as good as real life at some point. That's distant future. And not even graphics, you'll literally be inside the game/feel things. Will become indistinguishable from real life. There will be a point where what's considered 'real life' will be a very skewed notion

All consoles are weaker than PCs, so looking forward to 'next-gen' makes no sense.

There is an interesting phenomenon where better graphics briefly look worse and less appealing as we move towards photo-realism.

We love things that look totally real and we love things that look great but are clearly CG. The place in the middle where the graphics are almost perfect but just seem slightly off triggers some kind of natural aversion.

IMO somewhere around the PS2 is where we reached the peak of great looking but still clearly not realistic and a massive emphasis on game play mechanics. Game today clearly look better but are rarely fun enough to keep you playing for 5 or more years.

I suspect that things will reverse course as a few core game engines take over all game dev allowing for more dev budgeting to move to back to core game mechanics dev.

Nah you're just old papa.

Theres Virtual Reality, Argumented Reality, Neuralink or something similar probs and it'll only keep improving.

I don't think it'll end until it reaches a point where its like we're dreaming

this lol these dumbazz kids are buying GPUs for over $1,000 for 2k and 4k gayming but over 80% of players are still at 1080p or under. Back in the day could get a $100 voodoo3 card and a cheap $80 celeron processor and OC the balls out of it and have fun playing the cutting edge 3d games.

Its a fantastic fit for specific genres for sure, but certainly not all of them. The big limiting factor is in how to introduce walking. We have all probably seen the contraptions that hold you in place as your feet slide on a surface, but how immersion breaking is that crap strapped to you and how well does that actually work?

Completely agree. I've tried it about two times and both of them were games in which you had to walk but you still used a joystick which really took away from the experience. It still has a long way to go

Haven't played enough to experience this but I can completely see how it would happen. It'll get better as time goes on IMO

Check out the game sea of thieves on xbox if you have that console. It's got cartoony graphics, but the water is amazing!

I haven't played console games in years but when I was a kid, I loved looking at the mini instruction books that came with cartridges. Do they still offer those things in today's games?

Idk if it's still free on Steam, but agreed, water looks good on there.

I think it's like with any game I've played. Great graphics are obviously cool to look at, but my favorite games don't have the best graphics, like Super Off-road, NBA Jam, NFS Porsche Unleashed / Hot Pursuit 2, all the mario games. Tons of racing games before Forza and GT had pretty bad graphics, but I loved them all. It's all about the gameplay and addiction for me. Part of the reason I just don't play much of anything anymore. Gameplay just isn't as addicting.

Animation is the next frontier in 'next gen' graphics IMO, in so many games the textures wrapping a model is great, and definitely looks like the real thing, however you can put lipstick on a pig but it don't make it pretty. next level immersion will come from natural, fluid movement. facial expressions that don't look like a soulless robot, and figuring out physics around gear/items so we don't have clipping everywhere every time something is detached from the model.

The idea around the end-game of VR gaming is being able to "read" your neurons the way neuralink is doing right now with the monkey already being able to play a game with his brain:

So theoretically you'll eventually be able to connect to a similar device and you'll be in a dreamlike state where you see the world through googles and move and interact with the world through your brain.

I've never really cared about graphic quality. Ever.
It's not what makes a good game or a game worth playing.

It's the game and gameplay itself.
brb, then who was Minecraft.
then who was Smash Bros
then who was tetris.

Etc... the best games in the world and that have stood the test of time were not because of graphics.

That is just my onion.

I would be willing to bet that the addition that results from this will be crippling to real life, add that to how autistic kids already act IRL.
