Low-carb/Keto + 16/20-8/4 IF + getting up early + blocking distractions = FUARK

The flows are actually incredible.

Low-carb makes me not have energy spikes followed by lows.

IF gives a sustained flow + no wasted time prepping bull****.

Getting up early, around 5:30 AM, gives you a huge window of opportunity to work on the important stuff.

Put your phone somewhere and work on personal projects, skills upgrade, searching for another job etc until work.

Did this today and learned so much. Then, from 9:45 AM to 1 PM was basically finished with the workday.

Throw in a workout, then lunch and listen to podcasts. Still felt I had so much time to spare.

A Bethany type of fat sloot legit asked me how I got a "Line manager thank you appraisal" (bull**** we do in the company for wagie wagie treats), and I threw her off telling her:

to have a sugary smoothy

be more body positive and eat whatever she wants

and a made-up study about how browsing Instagram 30 mins before work makes you more competitive which helps in work as you want to outcompete others due to comparisons*

*BS, it hyperstimulates your brain so work becomes duller and the day is ruined srs

Do people seriously think keto is some sort of magic still? I'm not saying that it can't work, but I'm pretty sure the only reason so many people on it rave about it is because cutting out virtually all carbs, minus maybe leafy greens that have a chitload of vitamins/micros, is going to automatically prevent people from overeating on non-nutrient dense foods, which is the root cause of obesity in a place like America. On top of that, keto can leave you deficient in a lot of key micros, which is why hardcore people recommend you supplement on potassium, magnesium, etc.

I personally have had better results on a more traditional BB macro diet with a focus on eating nutrient dense foods and whole grains. The best part is I no longer have to worry about "muh carbs" when I'm out with friends and I have much more energy in the gym & am building more muscle since my lifts are going up.

With my experience with keto/IF:

Fat adaptation takes awhile to really kick in. Maybe a month, although that might have spoken more about my metabolic state at the time and ymmv.

Keto fats are fine for workouts but if you want a really intense session, 60-75 minutes, pushing yourself the whole time, athletic and whatnot -- carbs are always going to be superior for fuel. Fats are kind of there and work but suboptimally.

I do like the mental state of being in ketosis and fasting, though. Way sharper mentally, no brain fog whatsoever, no lunchtime daze from a meal as you're fasting. Very nice.

I tend to carb cycle these days, depending on how I plan to eat. Training days I'll eat x2 to x6 times a day. Off days x2 or outright fasting. If I know I'm going to fast say Thursday (meaning eat Weds night, don't eat again until sometime Friday) I tend to work my carbs around that so I'll enter the fast depleted and quickly in Ketosis. Fasting pre-ketosis is very easy. Fasting while still using glucose can be a drag.

So, some carbs early on the week, fit the bigger lifts in early as well. Later in the week, squeeze in a day or two of IF or outright fasting for 30+ hours.

I don't do this, because I'm not a workout Monk devoted to lifting/dieting, but from my experience, carbs are fine - just don't mix them with fats. So no ice creams or pizzas, but brown rice and a lean meat don't lead to bad weight gain. Balance your meals as either protein/fat or protein/carb and only take in as many carbs as you need to fuel whatever workouts are scheduled. Again, I don't really follow that myself but the few times I have for a month or so, it's always been good.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

no metabolic magic pill ofc, research has never proven this

but not overeating is king

and everything that helps you not overeat, a little or a lot, whether it is coffee or keto, is going to help you

I agree with you. This is aimed at the average Joe whose:

a) metabolic health is probably the office slob teetering between insulting resistance and diabetes.

b) interest is in mental clarity rather than squeeze as much power as possible for heavy weight athletic workouts

Some people respond differently to carbs. For manny people carbs just make them sleepy, hungry, and just watery in the abs.

There are typical issues with Keto, lack of libido, poor sleep, strength loss in the 5-10 rep range etc. To counteract this many people do great with carb ups, they can do standard style carbs ups where you just eat 200g or so of carbs every 3 days, or old school big carb ups on the weekend.

For many people Keto is a God sent, for many it’s miserable, and for many it doesn’t matter.

As far as lack of minerals, if one does Keto one should take in extra potassium and magnesium and salt from supplements and/or foods.

There are many roads to Dublin. Calories In vs. Calories Out and Lifting Weights a few days a week is what's important. Everything else is just conversation.

Repped for a non-keto zealot answer. This thread has been surprisingly civil, which doesn't usually happen with keto peeps, so respect to all. Only thing I don't get is why not just eat carbs moderately throughout your life instead of carbing up on weekends or whatever? Like, if there are clearly some deficiencies in the diet (i.e. poor sleep, lack of libido, potassium deficit, etc.), why keep things this way instead of just making healthier choices every day? Is there a benefit to going keto and then eating a **** ton of carbs on the weekend versus eating a similar amount throughout the 7 days?

Eating makes it hard to concentrate, that goes for EVERYONE.

Reason for that is your digestive system needs and takes extra blood to process food.

When you eat food your stomach takes blood from the rest of your body, including your brain, to break the food down.

That's why especially after a big meal, your body can get tired because it's having difficulty processing food and carrying out all the functions it needs to while you're still awake.

People who say they can't concentrate on an empty stomach are pretty much just being pussies.

Anyone who has ever fasted knows that hunger pangs subside relatively quickly and you're left with this super-clear/focused mind state.

I think hunger pangs are more of your body's knee jerk reaction to not being fed "on schedule" like most have done their entire lives, in the same manner that certain drugs operate after you come down (from a sharp drop in dopamine).

Repped back.

It helps many people keep hunger at bay, and stable energy with no crashes.

So, personally I have terrible insulin, even when I was young and lean, it was always the case, High blood sugar, almost diabetic, and high cholesterol. If I was to eat an apple now or with my lunch I would be REALLY hungry and can’t wait for my next meal. I would also want a nap sometime during the day! This is regardless of total daily calories! But if I eat no direct carb sources at lunch then I totally don’t care about food at all until the evening. This ability of low carb diets to help some people with stable blood sugar so they don’t go hungry or energy crash is perhaps the most interesting aspect of Keto.

The main point of big weekend carbs ups is the trick bodybuilders and Hollywood trainers have known forever - glycogen supercompensation. When you deplete glycogen (water in muscles etc.) and then you eat carbs first place carbs go to is to replenish glycogen, so you can get really pumped while your abs are still flat for a day or two, this is when you would want to have that photo shoot or shoot a movie scene where you have to be shirtless and so on. My av pic was taken after I had no carbs for a few days and then ate a day of carbs with no fats, like 1000 grams carbs maybe, the pump and vascularity was insane, I felt like I would blow up, could see every vein on my body. Lol

That works best for women.

To my understanding, physiologically/hormonally speaking: Women do better having a little junk food a day, men do better eating strict with a cheat day or two (as opposed to a little junk every day).

carbs make me sleepy.

if i eat mexican food especially.. tacos, etc im taking a nap. (very tough to avoid since i'm hispanic, wife same, obviously family the same)

low carb diet actually provides me more energy. prior to low carb diet, it was a requirement for me to nap in the evening DAILY.

I remember working in Latina America, so everyone has coffee and bread for breakfast, everyone has fat stomachs and no abs or muscles. Then everyone sleeps, what do they call it Siesta or something? So stupid... I eat a steak and stable energy all day bitch. And abs are still there.

What are your macros when cutting for a contest? I personally don't think I could ever go back to a high fat diet. I feel so much better on high carb, low-medium fat diet. I've also never had issues with crashing either.

so the thread is civil but you people always lose the point

the research is clear that metabolic fat-burning machines are not achieved through switching up macros as long as you are not deficient

but a lot of people are sedentary and fat

combine that with evolutionary problems with grains and you have a problem

there is amounting evidence re: keto and appetite suppression which leads people to create foods that cause less cravings (sugar, starches etc) and thus manage to lower their intake EASILY

no one apart from book pushers is saying that on a same caloric deficit low carb will lead to a better physique lol

but if on higher carb it leads to an ice cream binge but with keto you can go for more than 6 months and counting without even thinking about eating ice cream (my case) then there is something worth considering

because you eat as much as your appetatie wants you to

so searching for a diet that gives benefits on the fat burning level is a bit dumb - body autoregulates it

but for appetatie it is different

pro-athletes/bbers will never have insulin resistance and crash from carbs, their bodies regulated this very well

Currently on keto, love IF, and also understand all diets work and some are better for certain things. This article really addresses the heart of the matter that OP is talking about, specifically brain function and why some people feel better on keto.

https://www.t-nation.com/diet-fat-lo...-brain-on-keto
Don't think of keto as just a means of fat loss. In some people, it can reduce anxiety and mood swings, increase well being, and improve sleep. How? By increasing the conversion of the neurotransmitter glutamate into GABA, another neurotransmitter.
Why would that conversion make you feel better? Let's look at the symptoms of high glutamate. A person who has a high amount of glutamate might display the following:
-Insomnia (excessive excitation)
-Hypersensitivity
-Mood swings
-Social anxiety
-Easily addicted
-A poor response to failure (hard on himself)
Keto decreases glutamate and increases GABA. We'll talk about how it does that in just a bit, but now let's look at symptoms of low GABA. A person who doesn't have enough GABA might display the following:
-Stress and social anxiety
-Propensity to have high muscle tension
-Insomnia and overthinking at night
-Early riser (might wake up at 3 AM and can't fall asleep again)
-Takes everything personally
-Prone to chronic pain and headaches
-Frequent urination
-Hard time relaxing
-Easily frustrated
-Hypersensitivity to sounds
-More prone to tinnitus (ringing in ears)
-More prone to irrational phobias
-Disorganized
-More at risk of bulimic episodes
You can see how someone with high glutamate and low GABA wouldn't feel awesome. Since glutamate is converted into GABA, high glutamate normally comes with low GABA. In such cases the problem lies in the poor conversion.
So how exactly does the keto diet factor into all of this?
The Brain Benefits of Keto (For Some)
Ketones increase the action of the glutamate decarboxylase enzyme (GAD) that's responsible for the glutamate to GABA conversion. In other words, when you're in ketosis, you'll lower glutamate and increase GABA.
If you had a high glutamate or low GABA brain chemistry, you'll likely feel a lot better when you switch to keto. But not everybody will.
I understand what happens though. If you did feel awesome after doing it, then it's possible you've been feeling bad for a long time (often not even realizing it because you got used to it) and all of a sudden you feel like a new person.
What can seem miraculous is simply an increase in GABA and a decrease in glutamate. You're getting your brain back to what it should've been experiencing all along. But compared to your previous state it feels like a veil has been lifted from your eyes. When you have that kind of experience you can very easily turn into a keto evangelist.
But here's the thing: Some people will have the opposite reaction. It all depends on their brain chemistry.
I don't know either lol
