Why not use straps for deadlifts?

I've been using straps to train my deadlift. It allows me to go heavier deeper into a set with less tax onto my cns. My grip has never been a weak point on my deadlifts and I've never failed a max attempt from grip. The only time my grip has failed was when doing 4x8 with 500+. Why limit the rest of my body to something that doesn't really matter? I'm trying to train my posterior chain, not my forearms. Hit a pr last week without straps, hook grip, and grip was no issue whatsoever.... So what's the point?

Depends on what you're after, really. I will always go with chalk to help my forearm development(which sucks dick) and grip strength.

I go mixed grip. Just gotta remember to flex the tri's so I don't tear a bicep. I'm surprised I haven't yet lol.

Every strong yoked out brah I know who lifts legitimate weight uses straps, belt, and knee/wrist sleeves.

Real talk, the only people I know who talk chite or try to draw arbitrary lines the sand with chite like straps are all week *******s with embarrassing lifts and physiques SRS Real m/f'ers moving legit weight don't have time to care whether is cool or not, they strap up and lift weight SRS

As for grip strength, even if you lift average weight, you grips ill be stronger than the average person making that argument completely arbitrary. SRS

I always did a pronated grip for deadlifts because mixed grip felt unnatural and awkward. Grip was never an issue.

In to see OPs double overhand 500x8 deadlift.

But yeah OP, straps are 100% fine for deadlifts. If you know how to deadlift heavy or push yourself on deadlift, the weight gets too heavy for a double overhand and a mixed isn’t safe imo.

Deadlift is not the best grip builder so if you want a strong grip just do direct grip work. People talk about how 'straps r 4 pusiez brotha' but they don't realise that you can't double overhand forever unless you have freak grip genetics - your deadlift gains will outpace your grip gains.

Furthermore, the mixed grip is a way of making the exercise less grip-demanding, indicating that you're trying to avoid limiting your deadlift by grip, which is exactly the same thing that straps achieve, but straps are even better at it. No straps = less gains.

Firstly, I don't use straps because they hurt like hell. Sh*t gets super tight around your wrists and pulls at your skin and stuff. Screw that. I've never been able to DL as much with straps, they are awkward for me. But no hate if you use them srs. Doens't make you a b*tch.

Secondly, please post video proof of your deadlift #s. Those are seriously impressive especially given what I see in your avi. I know dudes who are 3x as jacked as you who are pulling for reps in the 400s.

Back in the day, I only pulled raw. However, now I pull with straps.

You can say what you want about mixed grip, keeping your elbow straight, training your bicep tendons and not taking steroids etc. but that risk of a bicep tear and $10,000 surgery + a cast for 3-6 months is always going to be there when you pull mixed with any serious weight.

I’m not so concerned about the imbalances but it might lead to asymmetries, particularly in the traps. Maybe. I’m not sure.

As for hook grip....tried it, feels kinda awkward, can’t really do serious rep work with it, and I’m a croupier so I can’t afford to kill the nerves in my thumbs.

I don’t compete in powerlifting and lol @ relying on deadlifts to build grip. There’s a thousand other things you can do to build grip that are better

Deadlift is a lot about leverages skill specific training and usually insect mode lifters can be good strong at it. I have repped 5 plates and I'm by no means a huge guy but I do have very long arms.

Double overhand your warmups. Straps for your working sets.
A young bull and an old bull were standing atop a hill looking at a bunch of heifers in a field below.

The young bull says "Let's run down this hill and fuk one of those heifers."

The old bull replies "No. Let's walk down there, and fuk them all."

No equipment crew, raw lifts only. Just my preference, if you like straps, use them, they're just a tool.

I used to be oposed to straps for some time. Recently I realized they can also help improve technique immensly. It's way easier to keep your your body tight, when not struggeling with your hand slowly opening up or having to reduce barspeed so the barbell won't slip.

If you're competing, then obviously it's pertinent to train without straps sometimes.

However, i used to powerlift and i ended up with a terrible trap imbalance due to mixed grip deadlifting, so i switched to using straps entirely. I have huge hands compared to most people so i can lift my max comfortably with mixed grip, but what's the point when i can use straps and i'm no longer competing or have any need to deadlift mixed grip?

People who try to act like its 'hardcore' and **** are the same people who talk about going 'beastmode' and have a 300lbs deadlift. Most people who are legit strong do not give a chit if you use straps or not.

Some people are just bio-mechanically suited to deadlifting and can have massive lifts without being jacked. I hit a 400lbs deadlift my first ever time deadlifting (although i had been lifting in general for about a year), and i was like 175lbs @ 6'3 lol. It's not like bench where (in most cases at least) you expect a big bencher to be jacked.

Twink newbs seem to be the only ones who ever say anything about using straps. Actual experienced lifters who have been in the iron game for a while wouldn’t even think about any equipment you used. Did the weight go up with good form? That’s it.

Unless you're a competing powerlifter, you should use straps on deadlifts IMO.

Even if your grip gives a little when going "double overhand" it can throw off the entire lift, exposing you to potential injury.

Mixed grip is also an injury risk, for obvious reasons.

Using straps makes the deadlift a smooth, almost mechanical lift.

And as for grip strength? I've got a much safer way to work your grip:

- Just deadhang from a pullup bar for time. Progress with weight, or even hanging with one hand. It's much safer, uses your body weight so you don't need to load up lots of weight and waste time, and builds your general grip strength.

I understand it with guys who use hook grip and need to pull working sets in the 7/800s for reps. But if you pull mix grip, there's zero reason you need straps. Grip should be a non-issue at any regular programming rep range.

mixed grip is an unnecessary injury risk

lots of guys have torn biceps using a mixed grip

also creates imbalances if you don't balance out the grip

just use straps
