Just watched the new Mortal Kombat movie

Underwhelming unfortunately. 5/10. Probably had my expectations set higher than I should have. It's a solid action flick.....and while it did stay true to MK in many areas, fell short in others.....one BIG area in the spoilers.

My thoughts:

Spoiler!

The Good:
- Fights and fatalities were brutal
- Characters very true to the game
- Sub Zero was a beast
- setup for a sequel hinting at adding more characters.
- effects were very good

The Bad:
- story was weak
- no actual "tournament" <---biggest flaw IMO. MK is about the tournament....wtf at a MK movie with no tournament.
- Scorpion had minimal screen time
- didn't like Cole's story much.
- movie felt rushed. it was 1:40, but feel it could have done better with another 30 or 45 minutes.

Im excited to see it. The "no tournament" confirms my suspicion that this is a prequel to the actual tournament where they can introduce Johnny cage

Johnny Cage will likely be a main character in the next one, direct reference to him at the end. This was definitely a "prequel " of sorts. There is also a hint at Kitana in the middle of the movie.

Some parts were better. Overall I liked the OG better as a movie, but this one had tons of bloody fighting in it, which lacked in the OG.

going to watch it tonite I think and obviously I don't expect a cinematic masterpiece just some semi decent fight scenes.

Effects were awesome, especially Sub Zero.

Acting was meh...but I didn't go in expecting an acting clinic. It's def not low budget.

Another Miscer posted a MK movie thread. He said it sucks and it is low budget. Now I am confused.

Guess it depends on what you think is low budget. The effects and scenery and such were good I thought. It was not like Annihilation, which was low budget.

The main problem for me was that the story was just bad. Midway through, I started drifting my attention to checking out a few things on my computer. THat's how you know something isn't good. Some of the gore was good. But the martial arts choreography was amateurish. I wanted the brutal fighting in modern action films with special effects added to it. It didn't have that.
