Rainbow trout brahs GTFIH

Brahs, any tips on obtaining rainbow trout gains? Been fishing a stocked pond in the northeast with Berkley power bait. No luck. The state literally dumps these fish into the damned pond so that people can catch them, but I’ve only caught 1 on 5 trips.

Aware me on technique/rigs/bait, Misc. BRB wanna take a raw, wriggling, shiny one (Srs).

You are on the right track with the powerbait. Use as light of line as possible. I typically use nothing more than 4 lb test. Use Fluorocarbon line. Trout are very line shy. If you aren't familiar with a Carolina rig. Look it up. You basically thread on a light (usually 1/8 oz) egg sinker and then tie on a barrel swivel. On the other end of the barrel swivel tie on 12-18 inches or so of line. At the end of the line tie on a very small (size 18) treble hook. Use as little powerbait as you can. Literally just enough to cover the hook. Cast out and set your rod in a holder if possible. Sit back and wait.

Thanks brother. I think my current rig sounds a little like what you outlined. My egg sinker is likely too heavy and my leader is likely too short. I had 30 lbs test on there, too (it was all I had in the basement this time around).

I’ll try to lengthen the leader, lighten up the egg and keep using the power bait.

Question: does jigging usually work? Do rainbows attack lures? If so, how fast/slow would you work the reel when returning the lure?

Slip float and small bit of powerbait trout eggs, or paste on a tiny hook. Dont fish too low in the water column, they often swim higher up.


I also do very well on escaped fish farm rainbows with small kwikfish and small number 0 and 1 mepps or panther martin style spinners.

Yep, or a Panther Martin spinner or a fly. It's more fun that way.

Catching trout on bait can be tricky. They have a tendency to nibble and spit so for every ten or so bites you might only hook one. Small treble hooks help in that regard. Also, salmon eggs or worms usually work better than power bait.

Farm trout are dumb as fukc. 6lb line, split shots and a small hook with green or pink powerbait is all that's needed. Worms are a good backup plan. I like to use trout magnet jigs when fishing bottom. Fish deeper when water temps are higher than 64deg.

Great info, guys - thanks.

I have been casting further out into the pond I am fishing. Do trout tend to be deeper, or do they come into shallow water? Wondering if I am not considering the structure/depth enough, or if it doesn't matter.

I hope to snag a few more of these before striped bass season gets going. I’m more accustomed to fishing saltwater than freshwater.

Hopefully it’ll be a good year for stripers, but where I’m at, we don’t see many until a little later. I am keeping busy with the trout until then.

Temps and structures are important. Fish higher during colder water temps and deeper when it warms up. Trout hold to structure for cover and ambush feeding so definitely look for boulders and trees underwater. If they're under 12" I'd even go to 4lb line for less visibility.

Flyfishing, srs.

Use to catch SO MANY rainbow trout back in the day fishing the rivers of big bear mtn. Its a learning curve but not that bad, if my 14 year old self could do it, you can too.

I always use maggots or wax worms (look like larger maggots) and extremely lite line.

sucks cuz this year i heard some places got stocked with 4lb trout..... while other places got small ass trout this year
Nice fish - and nice collection of frogs, too. Are those used for bait?

U wot m8??

I catch 40in Redfish down here inshore fishing on less than that.

Use the lightest setup you can, especially for trout and if the water is clear. That's so far overkill, I don't even think I owned an egg sinker when I lived up north fishing for trout.

Floated powerbait for an hour tonight. Not a single bite.

I wonder if the trout just weren’t in my part of the pond. Sadly, didn’t have time to pick up lighter line for my rig. I just fished a treble hook with powerbait and no weight.

Will keep trying. Only 1 trout in 6 trips...too many skunk days lately.

Bump - any brahs here ever catch brown trout or tiger trout? Any differences in bait/technique compared to rainbow trout?

Not a trout guy but I'm pretty sure trout have excellent eye sight so you want as natural of a presentation as possible. That means small hooks, light weights/sinkers, small baits in natural colors that have subtle natural movement, use small swivels and snaps or don't use them at all and light line as RICHSTRONG mentioned.
