I'll try to compare my normal driving routine with this tank. Old truck was in the 16's for normal driving.

Sunday afternoon I smelled a particular smell coming from my neighbors garage so of course I went over to investigate and to see if I could procure some of the source of the smell for myself. She was a D1 softball who is now in her early 30s and thought she could jump over a fence like she used to but instead tore her ACL and meniscus when she landed so she was using this plant for its pain easing benefits. When I asked if she could get me some she called over this dude. This guy was a turbo manlet ginger tradie. I introduced myself and he immediately made a crack about me being from the sticks because of my accent and asked me where I was from. I told him Alabama and I asked him where he was from and this fool is from the most white trash place in Mississippi which by default means its one of if not the most white trash place on the planet. He then proceeds to make fun of the state of Alabama while wearing, I chit you not, a houndstooth Alabama baseball hat. He is an excellent example of both the town he is from and the University of Alabama's sidewalk fans

If we have an advisory panel hitting F5 I will get some geezer opinions then.
I am effectively at my limits in my current job. I am being deliberately vague with some of this because with my actual title you are one jump away from my linkedin.
I was an exec for a $200M/yr company, who was then bought through a series of M&A by a larger group, we are now $1B/yr combined as a group. The work my company does is the same as everyone else, but my company specialized in way riskier projects ($$$).
Our company had the strongest balance sheet and margins of the group by a mile. Others were hammered by COVID while we grew our backlog, we are knocking out earnings forecasts and setting a record quarter every quarter while the rest of the group treads water. Some of it was luck and timing, but a lot of it was how my department developed and maintained business opportunity.
I was tapped by the Mothership CEO to take my same role across the combined group, use our 'magic' to diversify and grow all of the businesses. I have been working with the Mothership for 6-8 months now and its not working.
The place is filled with people from the COO down who have worked their entire careers at one company and nobody actually wants any change. That and the roles and DOAG of my department are so different that I cant push change if I wanted to, over there my job is a glorified working middle manager. I just don't have the authority or say in their business, I just make sure the status quo is maintained.
I do see a path to change. I could go to the top, grab the CEOs of all companies, break up the logjams and chart a course for change but I keep coming back to the fact that I just don't want to.
I have been 60 hr weeks since the shift in October, and I just dont have the energy or desire to spend that much time breaking up old processes and swimming upstream for 2 years in their company. I am fed up with their management group and bored to tears by their business. I am missing too much at home, and I am just getting very run down.
That and in the two years since the sale my original company has gone from $200M/yr to $400M/yr, with a very grey-haired Senior Exec/Board. Now with my time being diluted, my original business is starting to show cracks, the things I looked after and worried about and kept stress-testing as part of my day to day just arent getting done by anyone else. I really see a better opportunity there for myself long-term.
I have a meeting with my old President Friday to talk about it.
- I could pull the pin on the arrangement and he would back it up, he sees how the original business is suffering and misses having me as his fixer knocking heads across departments.
- On the flip side I hate tapping out, there is a path here to success for a Billion dollar organization.
Its a one percenter income either way, so the money discussion is academic.
I need to get my thoughts straight on it by Friday.

My dad has always said happiness is great, but peace is better. He's right, inner peace is much more important. I use that a lot to guide my decisions.

You get ONE childhood with your kids man. If you work through it, you work through it. You will never get those days back. In 10 years when your kids are teens and want nothing to do with you anyway, you can work 60 hours to make huge money and $600k/year and shorten the time to retirement and spend time with the grandkids.
So, what’s the priority?

Wish I had some words of wisdom. I don't. Everybody is a little different.
I sacrificed a lot of family time in the early years in order to help build this business. It's now built, so I now have the freedom to spend with my family.

I have been making as much time for family and her as possible so I havent been a ghost, but i'm either spinning plates at Company A, putting out fires at Company B, or running home to make sure I am there for a couple hrs before kids go to bed before finishing up whatever I am behind on.
End result has been zero down time for me, and getting to eat out of a bucket of chit at three different places depending on who I let down that day.

Its exciting to talk about but the reality of it is revolting when I really think about it. The higher up this ladder I climb the further I get from the part of the work that I actually enjoyed.

Honestly, is your life going to be any different making 25k a month vs 45k a month?
Based on your willingness to drive 10 yr old cars with cloth seats, I would say no

Your son only has one Dad and he will remember that stuff. Maybe watch or rewatch Hook with Robin Williams. I’m NOT saying people working their asses off and working a million hours are doing it wrong. Just... remember what is important to you. I may remember it wrong but I feel like you worked hard to get that little boy in the first place.Fawnl I think whats more telling is I feel like this is exactly the kind of ear-beating I am looking for.
And TX, it’s not always welcome and I don’t want to be that annoying fat bish in the thread that over steps and thinks she knows everything. Your situation is totally different too. Your wife isn’t just more $$ or a company. There is emotion, a marriage, the past, kids with you. I HAVE told you what I think though. I think I even apologized after because I thought I went too far.

It’s him, his wife, a 7 yr old and a 4 yr old
Monthly nut on that thing is $5k+
Not jealous of that, but the place looks like a resort
Taxes and insurance are about 20k a year
Even with the mortgage paid off, it probably runs about $2500 a month for taxes, insurance, electricity, etc
