Aight misc I broke one of the golden rules

I think I posted it a while back but my moms porches collapsed with me and her on it, giving me a 5 inch laceration on my head and breaking 6 of her ribs. I’ll post pics later. Anyways fast forward, I had two friends from work(restaurant) and they offered to redo the porch cheaper than the quoted 7300 from a contracter. Keep in mind I’m helping the whole time. I pay guy A 1500 and guy B 400 to rebuild post and set ledges while bolting it to the house. With materials I’m at about 4400. Guy A offered to finish the porch for another 1200, guy B said he would do it cheaper because we are friends. Him and his girl are big smokers but he does good work. I offer two hundred a day. One day he did about nothing, second day him and his girl came and he finished the last stringer and got the old boards down but no rail. His girl I guess cleaned by putting dishes everywhere? Anyways I paid him 100 and some thing happened in my life and I thought my wife had dealt with it. I get a text asking for 800 dollars. My mind is blown and I told him where the fuk did he pull that figure from when the porch isn’t finished? The friendship is over at this point. I offered the original 200 a day which would be 400 and if I get a butt hurt txt I’m blocking and not paying shiet. Am I in the wrong?

Hell no you aren’t in the wrong. If you guys agreed on 200/day and they came two days. If he isn’t doing the job and screwing off he’s just taking advantage of you and your situation.

You should have just went with the contractor, they have the man power, insurance and you don’t have to life a finger.

No not per person. The initial offer was 2700 for the job plus materials. I then cut main guy out and offered the other guy 200 a day to finish. His girl somehow threw herself in there to get paid 200 a day too? My mind is blown, why in the hell would I pay her a cent?

You shouldn’t because it wasn’t discussed, but if she’s there working he’s not going to eat the cost. As soon as she stepped foot on that job site you should have said something.

Sounds like a terrible situation, OP.

First, hope you and your mother are making a good recovery. That's quite a fall.

Second, If guy A offered $1200 to finish the job, but guy B(and his gf) is asking $800 - it's still cheaper than what guy A offered. Guy B did stick to his words.

Third, it seems like the discrepancy here is, you guys didn't decide what "finished" was.

At the end of the day, you are making your friends do manual labor for you. And if things aren't clearly laid out from the beginning, it's obvious you'll hope that the friends will throw in some freebies for you, because they are friends.

Don't forget to discuss this with others as much as you can. Just as you need physical healing, you will also need emotional and spiritual healing and support.

I read the whole OP, and I'll be honest, the most shocking thing wasn't the story, or even the gash on OPs head. The most shocking thing was his hairline. Damn.

Anyways, never get friends to do anything, get it done professionally so you can sue someone if they fuk it up.

We did. Finished was the porch would pass Inspection. This wouldn’t come close to passing inspection. The more I think about it tie ONLY thing he did was put a 6 foot stringer up and the old pre cut undamaged boards down with my tools. Something that would take 3-4 hours. Guy A offered to finish it completely rails and everything for 700, I’m now being asked for the same amount of money with a porch that has zero railing anywhere. Which I’ll do it on my own to get it done but it’s not the point.

LMAO. I pulled off the balled look well man it’s a bad picture I was in the ER for fuk sake. I do wear hats tho not gonna lie. And to the guy saying I’m just asking for another collapsed porch can go fuk yourself. Guy A is accredited and we put 6 lag bolts into the house. The house will fall before the porch. We added 3 post and all concreted. It isn’t going anywhere and won’t be my problem anyways

Rule #1: Don't ever pay good friends for legitimate chit like that, unless they understand it's going to be in pizza and beer.
Rule #2: Never pay T&M for a job like that. If you tell me you're going to pay be $200 an hour, that job ain't ever getting finished. If you tell me you're paying me $800 to do the job. I'm finishing that bitch in one day and making $100/hr.

Let me rephrase. He’s insured. He mostly does cabin rental fixes, he isn’t a contractor and I did not feel 4 days work with me helping of 2700 a decent or good price. It was borderline budget.

Mixing money and friends usually doesn't come out good OP. He worked on the first day and barely worked the second. I would've paid him for day one and not for day two.

I build a deck probably once a year helping out friends and family. They pay for materials and tools, and they just get me food and drinks. If you have no idea how to build a deck then I would of paid the contractor to do it or even seek out more opinions. Half the time you could buy the chit for the contractor and they'll do it for cheaper. They get markups on material, and at that point you could just pay for labor.

But all of that aside, what the fukk is supporting that deck? Looks like you have a 2x4 or a 4x4 sideways holding up the edges which is nowhere near enough to support a second story deck like this, are you nuts? At this height you'd need a 6x6 bolted into a concrete pile to support this.
