Is it is safe to say this was the most important event of the 21st century?

Even more so than Trump's election, 9-11, Great Recession, etc. etc.



The introduction of the iPhone basically changed the world. Social media is an even bigger influence than TV now for example. Smartphones have wiped away entire industries and created new ones.

Is it safe to say the world changed January 9, 2007? There is a pre-iPhone world and post-iPhone world.

smartphones & social media have impacted the world the most for sure in recent times

There were touchscreen smart phones before the iphone...

Another brand would have just had dominance.. iphone only has like 15-20% of the smartphone market and they didn't invent the smartphone or anything so not sure why it's that significant.

What mattered was:

High pixel density screen.
Battery life.
A touchscreen that actually worked properly.

The first time I used an iPhone, I realized it was game over for regular phones and RIM.

Honestly blackberry had superior devices they just realized the potential of consumer smartphone market too late and had all their marketing spend targeting business users.

That's literally what happened, blackberry dropped the ball rather than Apple making some groundbreaking discovery, they invented nothing and didn't even execute that well.. they just marketed to the right group of people in the right way. Their marketing team won them that war.

Apple just made them better, but hardly revolutionary.

"Most important" will always be a matter of opinion, but it absolutely has a case to be up there as the most important. As you mentioned, it gave rise to social media, but moreso than that, it's materially changed the way we interact with people & social norms (i.e. now filming people in public is normal instead of creepy, online dating isn't just for weirdos, etc.). 9/11 was a big deal and all, but I can't really think of how it changed how I interacted with people day-to-day or having that profound of an impact on my life.

Smartphones & the rise of social media plus whatever shakes out from this COVID bullchit (i.e. work from home, masks, disinfecting everything, etc.) will be events I end up telling my children/grandchildren as moments where "everything changed in the blink of an eye"

I think 2/3G was more impactful. The phone itself wasn’t the blow up. It’s the availability of high speed internet nearly anywhere.

It makes you wonder what the next step in the evolution of smartphones will be. They're already hand held computers with a high amount of processing power for their size, so what's next? Hologram calls? Computer glasses?

It's more a question of what improves connectivity? Holograms might eventually. Imagine someday being able to have 'cuddle dates' that are just photons and artificial sensory input. But that's not happening anytime soon.

the original iPhone really didn't change everything. At the time, several tech pundits actually deemed it a failure, or at least an underachiever. It wasn't until iPhone OS 2.0 and the iPhone 3G that things really changed. Namely, this was the introduction of the App Store.

The smartphone was bound to happen. I wouldn't credit the iphone for the change in how we interact since it wasn't the first to introduce ppl being overly attached to their phones.

Maybe some of you have forgotten but the sidekick is what really changed things. no touch screen but it did have internet.

It came with a wrist band and with ALL of the celebs at the time using them everyone wanted one and ppl ALWAYS had it in their hand or hanging from their wrists. This is when the phone became an extension of us and we picked up the habit of always checking it.

I'll never forget the first time I saw someone using an iPhone. My friend got one at release and he was showing me it one day during high school in 2007. My mind was so phuckin blown. He was showing me YouTube and other cool ****. Mogged my flip phone I got in 2004.

I consider social media a part of the smartphone revolution. Yeah, it existed before the iPhone, but it was really the iPhone/smartphone era that shot it into the stratosphere. ******** and Twitter wouldn't be half as popular without smartphones, while Tik Tok, Instagram, and Snap wouldn't even exist most likely. Only YouTube I think could be just as popular in the PC era.
