46.4% of people in prison are there on drug offenses. Far and away the largest percentage of any type of offense .

This may be true but what's your point?

If the majority of those incarcerated are violent criminals what do you propose be done with them?

I think we should also be targeting the causes of crime but that doesn't mean cutting corners by releasing criminals who have already committed crimes.

Working around the very people who qualify for this all I can say is... hah! Our recidivism rate is insane, I'll see them all again before too long, they all come back sooner or later.

I'm definitely not advocating releasing violent criminals.

However, it is proven than incarceration doesn't work. We also have for profit prisons and prosecutors who make careers on conviction percentages and not justice.

I don't know the answers, but starting with not locking people up for drug offenses, in turn making them unhireable and 5x as likely to resort to violent crimes would probably be a good start.

Investing into actual rehabilitation programs with the money saved by avoiding predatory and overzealous prosecution of these drug offenses would help.

Imagine if the trillions spent on the war on drugs since the 80s was used to invest into high risk communities and rehabilitation programs.

I genuinely don't know the exact solution, but I know there is no reason for a country with the resources of the USA to have the highest incarceration rate in the world. Especially when 47% are there based on silly prohibition.

How our drug rehabilitation works for meth, and this is 100% srs. Since the withdrawals are bad the State, in its wisdom, created the MAPP/MAP program (forgot what the acronym stood for). When an inmate is placed in this program (it's easy to get into), they are given some nice pharmaceutical meth to 'ween' them off... but the inmate simply says he still feels the withdrawals and then just stay on the program and get free meth. They parole and now do not have that sweet sweet state issue meth, so they just go back to the sht on the street which isn't as good, and the cycle of crime begins again. Robberies and theft to pay for the habit, and back into the system again.

Also, in my experience, very few are in on only drug charges, most are robbery, theft, assault, ect with drug enhancements. Gotta feed the habit.

MSM drives the narrative that they're most all good ol' boys that got caught with some marijuana and shouldn't be there.

Reality is pretty much everyone I know that has ever had prison time is from either violent crime or something that was a blatant felony. (guy was TRAFFICING FIREAMS) lol.

Yep, as shtty as it is the majority of guys who genuinely reform have been down 15+ years and finally realize this isn't the life they want. So many kids in the 18-26 range who think they will be ride or die for life, and by the time they realize how bad it is they have a life term... They are simply tools to the gangs they are in to make money and they don't realize it.

There's a difference between being locked up with a drug offense, and being locked up with a only drug offense.

Look up % of inmates that are there ONLY due to non violent drug offenses. My sources say < 20%

This even includes those yet un-convicted in jails. Without that group, you are looking at 15%:https://www.prisonpolicy.org/graphs/pie2020_drugs.html

And if you were to exclude drug dealers moving hard drugs (IMO should be in prison; not a victim less crime). Then the % goes even lower.

So yeah, a large number of people being given prison sentences for only having an ounce pot on them is a myth

That’s because most people who commit crimes always have drugs on them. The drugs usually aren’t the top count but a additional count added to everything else so drug possession stats are always high.

Didn't you hear?

If you violently assault and rob someone, you are a bad guy. But if the police catch you and find some drugs on you, you were actually a good guy greg the whole time!

Over 80% ofALLprisoners are in there for non-drug offences.

That 20% number should be 0.

Would also like to see a study of how many people's first conviction was a non violent drug offense and what role the criminal record played in their graduation to more serious crimes.

Well, that casts more doubt.

Because if those numbers don't exceed 100%, they don't mean what you think they mean, because people do get locked up with multiple felonies

I actually realized that after I made my post. Curious how they came up with the percentages then.
