Idgaf about winery. All that matters really is location and grape.
That being said, get a bottle of The Prisoner - Cab/Zinfandel blend its awesome.
Outside of that, Washington has the best value imo. Great Cabernet and Merlots there

Currently they are Stags Leap Artemis and Chateau Montelena Cab. For a less expensive bottle, 1975 is pretty good.

I like smooth reds. Not full bodied but not too light.
I love this Spanish Rioja 2009

This is new to me but also great (and Spanish). 2016

I’d like to know also.
One of my favorite bands Tool’s lead singer has a vineyard and distributes his own wine but have never ordered a bottle although plan to.
I have zero experience with good wine but I’m not looking to pay a chit load just for wine.

If you like whites - I recommend Honig’s Sauvignon Blanc.

Instead of favorite I would say best at $12 or less:
Apothic red blend
Cavit pinot noir
Barefoot pinot noir
Alot of good Spanish wine and Italian wine at that price point, too many to list. Temperanillos, riojas, Chianti, etc.
Malbecs are without peer with a steak for me. Deep, full, rich, perfect compliment to a steak. The combined flavors are like having a red wine sauce on the steak because a Malbec is heavy enough to linger the whole meal. Heavy drinking if you are planning on downing a bottle though.
