Do people actually know their extended family outside of 1st cousins? srs.

I took a 23 and me test a couple years ago and recently connected online with 2nd cousins, 1st cousins of my parents, even 3rd cousins, learning about my great grandparents, etc.within the past year. I even talk online with 3rd and 4th cousins even though we have no clue how we are related besides sharing common great great grandparents. It's mind blowing to me. But apparently there's people out there that can trace their family way back hundreds of years to like the 1300s and know all the names of their ancestors. They even met their 4th cousins in person and can contact them whenever they want. I barely know about my dad's side and his parents.

Is is really that common for people to have extensive family tree knowledge/connections?

I have family members in Australia who I don't know at all and my nan said I came from "Lithuanian descent" so I could also have family there lol.

My parents, in particular my father, knows many of his extended cousins. He grew up in a rural area were many of the family members worked with each other, went to school with each other, etc. They used to have large family gatherings.

Having grown up in urban cities myself far from most family members I barely even know my 1st cousins. I have done my family tree though and can trace some family lines back to the 1500s. It's kind of interesting in that I've found records of my ancestors from over 100 years ago that were doing genealogy research, and knew about their ancestors pretty well.

dude that's mind blowing you have the resources to go back to the 1500s, kudos to your ancestors for actually giving a **** about the family legacy. my ancestors on both sides did a terrible job of that, only a few of my living elderly relatives cared to preserve family info and that only goes back to my great great grandparents and is limited in info. I'm going to keep records and photos of my family so my descendants won't be as disappointed as I am on not knowing much.

that's cool, no one is obligated to keep in touch with anyone, I'm not encouraging anyone to do so if they don't care

Just curious to see how common or uncommon it is to know of/ be connected with distant relatives.

Come from a large family. Used to have regular gatherings with 1st cousins (have 30+ first cousins) and know quite a few 2nd cousins. Don't see them much anymore but always enjoyed spending time with them. Would be interesting to see a full family tree

I keep a family tree in case something goes down. We live in a world of strangers so it's nice to have a network;even if it's a long shot your distant relatives would actually care or wanna help you. Better chances of help than strangers or even friends

FYI If you're American and you have the name Haskell in your tree, it's a near certainty we're related. If you have Dow, maybe a 3 in 5 chance.

On my mom's side, Yes. We have some overlap, so a lot of my first cousins are my mom's age. I grew up referring to them as Aunt and uncle because of the age difference, and their children are my and my brothers age.

I know my 3rd cousins from both sides, got a giant ass extended family. Dad had 10 siblings and mom has 3 siblings, 4 step siblings. Really close with two 2nd cousins as their dad is my dad's 1st cousin, and mom is my mom's 1st cousin. All the people in my mom and dad's generation grew up in farms and were close, scattered across the globe but still in touch with most of them.

I've met/stay in touch with some of my second cousins. 4th cousin+ is barely related tbh, would feel kinda weird reaching out to someone so distantly related.

yea I feel you by the time you get past 2nd cousins, unless you gave solid record keeping , a lot of the time you are not even sure who the common ancestors or relatives are, and it feels like a forced interaction with a stranger who has the same DNA as you.

I have over a 1000 3rd and 4th cousins on 23 and me and the number grows every month. I can count on one or two hands of the people that actually want to be friends and possibly meet up IRL.

I wasn't exposed IRL to my dad's side or to my mom's extended family. It's been hidden from me until I took the DNA test a couple years ago. I have a huge void in my personal life of family connection. I feel like I missed out big time growing up as kid compared to others. I am now a grown man trying to make for lost time and connections.

I know it comes off as cringe and desperate , possibly immature . But life is shorter than we think, I wanna make the best of it by connecting with like minded distant relatives.

I’m half Filipino so I know my extended family. We had a family reunion in the Philippines a few years back and holy ****, I met some distant family from my great grandfathers side of the family. I’m more closer to my distant cousins on my Filipino side than my first cousins from my white side.

Even met my Filipino second cousins from UK and AUS. My Norwegian side couldn’t care less to get to know me.

awesome bro, great for you, srs. I'm Filipino as well, mom and dad. But born and grew up in the USA. I noticed my relatives in the Philippines or who were born there take their connections with extended family seriously. My American born and raised relatives don't give AF about that stuff. I guess it's a difference in cultures. Community and family tree mind set in the PI vs. the Western idea of laser focus on yourself,wife,and kids and dog while putting little to no attention to relatives outside of that

NOT knocking either one, they have pros and cons. I try to blend the best of both while purging the negatives of both.

I have a few key families in my family tree that are heavily document. All I had to do was go back a few generations to find the exact link to existing trees and it's easy from there. The common ancestor I have with the Bush family was one generation before people started coming to the colonies - would have been at the start of the 1600s. Because of the Dow connection, I have links to a lot of famous and semi-famous people. Tony Dow of Leave It To Beaver is somewhere around a 5th cousin, give or take. One Nathan Dow married Grace Ingalls, so I have a connection to the real life Little House on the Prairie family through that marriage. And the founder of Dow Chemicals is distantly related.

Found someone who has a detailed tree of my Canadian ancestors. I reached out a couple years ago to give them some missing info, and I saw one of my aunts and a cousin had also reached out.
