Those two whales combined add up to approx 0.03% of the weight of that ship.

It'd be like dragging a squirrel behind your car.

There isn't much you can do on the open ocean to get rid of them, especially when two huge whales are stuck to your hull.
Sure misc experts may say that bla bla bla get divers out or dislodge them with cranes.
The navy is always going to take the safe route and head out to port for maintenance.

As for avoiding whale strikes, it's almost impossible
1) you cant see chit underwater whilst on the navigational bridge
2) ships are not easily manouverable esp when cruising at high speeds (30+ kt)

It's force majeure

Military vessels are using all kinds sensors and frequencies that interfere with marine life. Usually they are scared off by sonar ping or the droning of the ships propellers. However some frequencies are known to attract certain animals.

As for how they got stuck - ship's hulls arent always smooth. Certain High speed vessels use stabilizers: kind of like fins that protrude from the sides. Etc

Not sure if this is how these specific whales got killed, but they can get hung up on the bow and then force just keeps them there


Said one was an adult and the other a juvenile I think - I wonder if the juvenile got stuck and the adult went to try to assist or vice versa

This sometimes happens and there's no way to really know unless you see it. If it's underwater and gets stuck on the front, you'll never see it since it's impossible to see the front of the ship unless you get down in a smaller boat to check it out. The front part under the water is shaped like penis (srs). So if it gets caught on that you'll just drag it since it can't fall down and the force of water keeps it pinned (see pic above). But those whales account for 1% of the total weight of the ship so you'd never know something was off.

What's even crazier is when ships dock in ports in poverty countries, people will hide out and sneak onto this part or onto the rudder to get a free voyage to another country. Not realizing that once the ship leaves port it sinks down and they end up drowning to death, srs. You'd never know unless you checked.

As surprising as it is, Navy ships are heavier than whales.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.

I'm in the Navy and can confirm, you would have no fkn idea those things were stuck to the ship. I would think they would have felt the initial strike, but who knows. The US Navy takes this chit pretty seriously. There are very strict navigational regulations around Mayport/Jacksonville because Wright whales breed there.

Considering the whales this Australian ship struck were 65 feet and 25 feet long I'm guessing it was a mother and calf.
And relief washes over me in an awesome wave

That ship is a lot bigger than the Australian destroyer but both should have a sonar dome like what the whale is lying across in that pic.

Assuming the whales were a mother and calf they were probably swimming like this and were broadsided by the ship:
