Some things I have noticed since leaving software dev for business analyst role [srs]

- I do surface level, "strategy" type of work that leads to product/project manager type, I believe.

- Work is kind of more enjoyable as you don't have to shuffle through established codebases and low-level autistic effort to see where it broke. **** that.

- I appear more visible and more valuable, all the Head Of X at the Fortune 500 are Whatever Degree + MBA.

Shall I get an MBA on top of my Comp Sci degree and enter consulting or some **** like that.

no humanity teaches anything but it is about the certificate and roles

and whilst I appreciate the accounting aspect as important for every company - I don't want to work in Corp Finance or Accounting as that sounds something that you end up hanging yourself with

and do you mean CPA because I can't do a Masters in Accounting with a Comp Sci Major I reckon

A) can't get a CPA because you don't have an accounting degree.

B) MAs are for teachers and tax professionals.

The only thing that'll benefit you in your position is more accounting understanding to speak to 8K 10K financials - regardless it won't show on your resume to say "I tOoK iNtErNeT cLaSsEs!"

Beyond that it is 'who knows you' not what you know.

You seem to have your mind made up. Go ahead and take your MBA courses.

I have an MBA as well - but what would I know.

I got my MBA when I was in my mid-twenties and had already been working for a fortune 500 firm for 5 years.

Does your employer cover the cost of the MBA? Can you get into a top-tier program?

Work experience and making a few friends will take you further than any postgraduate degree can based on my time at a few different Fortune 500's. Many people below me had MBA's and even PhD's, but my career continued to progress while theirs stalled out. In the end I attribute all my success to spending almost 20 years on the misc and learning what a true man is made of.

You go to an accredited college to learn accounting. Don't do it online it isn't intuitive. Accounting is one of the weirder sciences but if you're really into 'business' accounting is what you learn because that is the 'language' of business.

I don't recommend accounting to people in general as it is not fun, a dying industry, and limited to CFO/CEO boardroom types of people which is an extremely niche group as well as auditors/public accountants who are 'into' this stuff.

It is an autistic field and extremely anally retentive. If you aren't driven into being a statistician and number cruncher you really shouldn't want to work in accounting or learn accounting or understand business really. Analysis and accounting are different but to be able to understand why analysis happens you need accounting as a foundation. Especially when you start applying concepts like percentage of completion, time value, SPI/CPI, and then forward forecasting projections of revenue at risk and EPS and cash flow charting.

Thanks for the overview brah. I am looking to pivot my career but I can always take some accounting classes. The pivot happens through taking a top MBA. Not sure how I can do that through accounting classes.

What are your mid-term and long-term goals? What type of positions and areas are of the most interest to you and what parts of the job do you most enjoy?

You aren't wrong regarding visibility and internal opinions of your value to the company. If I am understanding your prior role correctly the best you can do (in many Executives eyes) is be invisible. They have a baseline expectation that all that **** will work fine and even if you did stellar work we (they) lack an understanding and appreciation for what you did that made it so great.

It sounds like you are probably doing work that is fed into a product or project manager and might be interested in that type of role? MBA is always a great option, though there is as much value in the optics of that than there is in the course work. Depending on where you want to go next one of the most valuable things can often be demonstrating the skillsets internally and turning that into a developmental role for 2-3 years.

A comp. sci degree (or whatever the heck you have. I told you i dont understand!) will not enable you to break in if you were interviewing externally. That degree + and MBA or an in-progress MBA + relevant experience in your desired role = you're in the club. Especially now that the story is cohesive of how you leveraged your expertise into this role.....loved it and showed strategic thinking ability....pursued further education + this role, etc.

Baffles my mind how people still choose to go the corporate route, I could never work for a "big" company with all that office bs and corporate culture ... ugghh. I would much preffer to have my own kebab joint in a chitty side street at least you're your own boss and the only limit to grow is the one you set for yourself not having sto suck that corporate cawck to get ahead.

I'm not hating on you OP tho don't believe that I am, I'm just expressing my opinion. I think MBA's and masters in general ara a scam and worthless, unless you're planning on going the full academic route and get a phd, otherwise you're just getting in debt to network and to be part of a "club"

Good luck with your career goals, srs. If everything fails I'll help you set up a taco joint over there

Why not without the MBA? I can always try Big 4 and Big 3?
