I think dying the villain would be a worse thought.

you can be a hero and do good deeds and people will not show any gratitude. hell they will even scorn and mock you.
what's the point of being the hero for people who would throw you under the bus for 100 bucks?

thats who you do it for. the others are already on a one way ticket to hell. one doesnt need or even want their respect or appreciation. they should simply be ignored. pittied perhaps if you can find it in you to pitty them but most of them are not even worthy of that thought or emotion

No. Don't agree. I don't have to die to be a hero. Heroic behavior comes in many forms. Helping those in need, teaching, leading, reprimanding, scientific breakthroughs medicine. You walk your dog today? Congratulations, you are a hero. From the dogs perspective.
My point is, it's all perspective/attitude.

Nah I don't think corruption is guaranteed over time, but disillusionment will definitely arrive at some point. At that point, there is a choice you make in the kind of person you will be.
Sometimes people try and give the impression that corruption is inevitable, that everyone eventually breaks and submits, giving up their morality and bending their will in exchange for some paltry comforts.
The truth is that the people who refuse this bargain don't make a huge deal out of it, and you won't see them bringing down others to ease the pain of their own crushed hopes. It is this invisible treasure that the broken man covets more deeply than anything else, because it cannot be bought or obtained through any impure means.

Curious, would you say it's more choice or simply a reaction to stimuli? And what facets determine reactions?

I don't know everything, but I do know that no one is beyond redemption nor are they forced to transgress on others. It's just that the widest path often leads to ruin and the narrow path takes some courage and sacrifice.
The world itself is corrupted, so avoiding or undoing corruption is an active effort. As long as you are alive, there is an option to do right by others and make peace. That is just my two cents though, I would not put my point of view over anyone else's.

Hero implies that you're contrarian and possibly naive.
The meaning of the quote is that if you live long enough going against the grain in a way where everyday is a constant uphill battle, and there's endless friction in achieving your goals because the environment within which you exist is not conducive to your goals or ideals, eventually you will become like water and change your goals, or find a way to achieve them in a way that benefits from your environment rather than tries to change it.
This sounds like 'villainy' because your original ideals of eliminating certain things in the world have changed, and you now no longer care, so long as you reach *one* goal.
It's absolutely true. You can't change EVERYTHING at once, so instead you will change one thing, but to change one thing, it comes at the cost of surrendering your other ideals.
