Why do kids shoot up schools?
The generic explanation is that they were bullied, which is a rather simple explanation. Obviously the truth is far more complex and nuanced.
My opinion?
It's not the lowest of the low, the kids at the bottom of the social totem pole. Those types usually just want to be left alone, to simply survive through high school.
Instead, I believe school shooters to more typically be mid-tier types who have a heightened perception of self, an internalized sense of superiority. They think they're better than others, and that they're better than they actually are. So, when reality pokes holes in their perception of the world, they respond dramatically and erratically, trying to "maintain frame."
This was the case I believe in Nikolas Cruz's situation. He got in a fight at school over a girl, lost, then got ruthlessly clowned by the community. He never let it go, which no doubt played a large part in his actions. He wanted retribution against the school body at large for ****ing with his frame.
I base this belief off this Reddit comment I saw the other day.

What the shooters studied did all have in common, though, was an outsized reaction to perceived social rejection. So when they experienced what would have been a relatively insignificant issue for most students—the breakup of a week-long relationship or normal teasing from peers—the school shooters would take such slights very personally. They had a history of insecurity and overreacting. That doesn’t necessarily mean they were bullied though.
They’d also often make choices that would lead to further peer rejection. I’m not talking about joining the chess team because they liked chess, even though it’d be “social suicide.” I’m talking about doing things like claiming to be in a gang and bragging about made-up crimes, when it’s obvious they were not involved and couldn’t have done what they claimed.
The outsized reaction, a sort of social persecution complex, also colors what they leave behind—diaries, blogs, videos, etc. The picture of the school shooter as a loner bullied by the cool kids until they snap is largely informed by the killers themselves. That picture gets hyped in the media, but there’s good evidence to show that we can’t take those narratives at face value.
That’s why we need more in-depth study about mass shooting incidents. Problem is, research is often crippled by the Dickey Amendment
. We need to repeal that so we can get a better picture of what’s actually going on before these shootings, so we can stop them in the future.

Because our nation and our culture are sick. It's built upon unspeakable violence and horrifying crimes against humanity. A mass shooter is doing the same thing. Some of them evenly openly admitted that they had similar intentions.
Do you think that someone can just slaughter men, women, and children by the millions, put up some suburbs, and then everything is just hunky dory? Just look at the long and storied history American race riots to see how commonplace this sort of violence is.
This country and its people are seriously out of balance. The Hopi have a word for it, they call it koyaanisqatsi. Not the movie, but the actual idea of a life of moral corruption and imbalance that calls for for another way of living. The Christians just call it sin.
Beyond all ominous Christian or Indigenous overtones, the simplified answer is deep moral corruption and its consequences. No one in their right mind should want to do something like this, but something about our culture tends to breed and even encourage sick minds.
Think about how America has rewarded the type of person who would scalp children or own slaves, then you can understand why someone could see a mass shooter as a source of inspiration.
