Who was best grunge vocalist 90’s/early 2000’s alt/grunge vocalist?
Kind a spin-off from a thread about lane Staley.
Also based on vocals alone and not adding importance such as Kobain who killed hair metal.
So
1. Cobain - Nirvana
2. Staley- AIC
3. Cornell - Sound Garden/Audio Slave
4. Maynard -Tool/A perfect Circle
5. Eddie Vedder -Pearl Jam
6. M shadows gets a nod to be considered
7. Brandon Boyd -incubus
8. Matt Bellamy - The Muse
10. Billie Corgan - the smashing pumpkins
11. Scott Weiland - STP
I’m sure I missed a few.
Or other if not on list?
Also why don’t we see this type of talent anymore. Is rock truly dead in the USA or do you see it coming back at some point to have meaningful lyrics and talented bands that hold substance in their music.

I don’t consider Maynard as grunge but if he’s on a list of vocalists he’s the best one. Otherwise I’d say it’s probably Eddie Vedder, and maybe a case could be made to put Cornell at the top. Staley’s voice was great too, but I don’t consider it as versatile or skilled…more so just raw, emotional, and a perfect fit for the band. Surprised to see Corgan on the list. SP is my favorite band but even I can admit that his voice is pretty poverty.

Minority opinion - I've always hated Eddie Vedder's voice. He is technically a good singer sure, but I can't stand his tone/inflection/everything.

Chris Cornell was technically the best
Layne was the best though.
Eddie Vedder inspired the most copycats. Obviously it can’t be him if it was so easy to replicate his tone
Kurt was a chit singer
Honorable mention to mark lanegan

Hard to pick just 1 really, but if I had to, probably Cornell. Vedder has a great voice, but is a huge douche pickle.
AIC has some great songs, but not sure I'd put Layne as the best vocalist.

Layne had power, range, and above all else he was able to put such emotion into his voice. That is what puts him above the others, you might be able to say Vedder had more power, Cornell had more range, but Layne could equal or nearly equal them in those areas but his emotion and sound put him above the rest. He also was a good song writer and Jerry was as well.
There were so many great singers in that era though, probably my favorite era of music.

Also why don’t we see this type of talent anymore. Is rock truly dead in the USA or do you see it coming back at some point to have meaningful lyrics and talented bands that hold substance in their music.

any talented young kids in rock bands seem to be complete ripoffs
Greta Van Fleet is a poverty led zeppelin clone without the mystique or swag
most young dudes who are gifted in music would rather make bedroom pop or chitty nashville acoustic americana
if anyone knows a legit upcoming talented rock group that isn't a bunch of hacks, please drop a link
