Only #3 for the year, shame on me.

-Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman

I was inspired to pick this up after the author's appearance on MiB podcast and I am overall happy with that decision. The author makes a comparison between thinking intuitively vs. statistically. AKA thinking "fast" vs "slow." Dr. Kahneman provides multiple examples of how people who are otherwise perfectly rational can and do make choices that are logically unsound. Also found it insightful to relate the postulates in this book to the popularity and addictiveness of social media platforms such as Tik Tok and Twitter.

Took a couple months to actually reach the end; in part because I like to take notes of my own when reading, but mostly due to the sheer density of the book. Definitely recommend if you find decision theory (for which Dr. Kahneman is a Nobel laureate) and behavioral economics fascinating.

I don't like dystopian novels even though I've read a few (and King's The Long Walk adds one more to that list), but I'm about 60% of the way through with King's The Running Man and it has certainly kept my attention. Like many movies, there's a huge departure from the book . . . so much so, I don't know why they just don't pay the author for the rights to steal the idea while changing the title and the name of the characters, but King's Ben Richards is 6'2" and weighs 165 lbs. The silver screen Ben Richards is Schwarzenegger

Kaz I am listening to "In Fury Born" by David Weber right now and you will definitely want to try it out. It is his novel "Path of the Fury" rewritten with an entire new prequel book that tells the main character's back story. The two books together make his definitive version of the story, at 31 hours in audio format it really feels like two books in one.

I am only halfway thru but I feel it's the best Weber book i have read!

Holy hell, is there anything even half decent coming out nowadays? Every best of nonfiction list is all about identity politics, which does not particularly interest me, let alone when almost every recommended book about it nowadays is about it. Are there really people just building up huge libraries all about the same topics presented in slightly different ways? I understand having your genre but it's just outrage porn at this point. Is there just no good nonfiction coming out in the past two years? The fantasy genre has been absolute trash, you have to delve into the self-published and online stuff nowadays. But damn it's hard to find a recommendation that came out in the past 2-3 years.

I enjoyed "futureproof" about what jobs are going to survive the waves of automation and industry, and I also read "Future Sea" about what can be done to help the oceans. Don't really read any political books myself.

in on this! lost 21 lbs and need to love probably 25 more for ultimate shreds

going to Florida in 8 weeks for my bday and moving there permanently in 12. trying to be in as best of shape possible before I head out there

going to be doing OMAD for 7 weeks. hopefully i could lose at least 7 in those 7 weeks and move the last few the few weeks later!

Fantasy - The Burning by Evan winter. Reads a lot like gladiator. Cradle series if you're into more abstract stuff, reads a lot like Dragonball Z.

Non fiction - I usually read Strength and conditioning, predictive behaviour like Dan Ariely, why we sleep, narconomics, manhunters (the narcos lads).

I caught the reading bug but cannot see myself reading 52 books in 52 weeks. It's hard enough to find a book worth spending time to read. I started reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac (don't confuse this with On The Road The Original Scroll). Read books likes this and listen to Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, etc.

Wow, I finally got access again! Crazy that they changed rule and I cannot even read posts.

I finished listening to 10x rule, good book.

I also finished listening to tools of Titan. I loved it! I got ebook version right after i listen to first chapter.

Try tools of Titan. It is written by the author of 4 hour work week. You won’t be disappointed.

I started reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac (don't confuse this with On The Road The Original Scroll). Read books likes this and listen to Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, etc.
Welcome to thread. The OP has some pacing ideas if you ever want to try the challenge. For real though just focus on reading more than you did last year - if it's a habit you look back on as rewarding, maybe do more next year.

The Stranger – Albert Camus - 5/10

Not much to say about this one. Nothing over exciting. Just a basic story of committing a crime and having to own up to it. Some older books don't translate well to modern times. Even though this is considered somewhat of a classic it just seems dated and boring and ultimately forgettable.

You might watch Henry's Crime. It is a similar story about a guy who doesn't start living life until he goes to jail, only it is kind of funny and filmed in Canada.

Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury - 5/10

I don't get it. This is definitely considered a classic but again seems dated with the way it was written, but even worse it is hard to follow. I was interested at first and there were a few parts I liked, but the story itself just seemed confusing and fragmented. I wasn't really sure what was going on for most of the book, but it seemed like a huge metaphor for saving (banned) books from being set on fire or something. I felt lost in the metaphor so I guess I'll just stay confused lol.

I finished the book Idiot Brain. It is okay. I like books about the brain. But maybe I don't like science books that much? Maybe this book is not exciting enough? I don't know...

I am listening to a business book, The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It. It has a good rating on Goodreads. I am not sure I will like it or not. I am seeking the next good book =)

50% through speed trap. Book by Ben Johnsons trainer about all their training as well as the steroid cycles. Very interesting 10/10 so far. Of particular note is once both your samples test positive you aren't immediately out... it goes to a vote by the IOC. Apparently a lot of people get let off.

The Pelevin short stories were funny as hell. Very quick read. A good introduction to his inventive mind.
A bit of an update.
I finished reading Gogol's Dead Souls. Very nice writing, brings a lot into view about middle and upper class Russian society pre-revolution. Gogol has a very interesting writing style it's no wonder why he was a great influence on contemporary and later Russian writers.

Finished Heart of a Dog by Bulgakov. It only took 3 or 4 nights to read. Wonderful story, preposterous plot, and extremely funny. Bulgakov is a fantastic writer, if you haven't heard of him check him out. He's famous for Master and Margarita, but his Heart of a Dog is as well written and is a hilarious short story.

I think I'll tackle Notes from the Underground by Dostoyevsky and then read some of my friend Viviana Rizzo's recently published collection of Poems titled Make My Hope Eternal (available through Amazon). Viviana is an Italian author and journalist who has a degree in Slavic studies (she's fluent in Russian). After that I think I need a good dose of Pelevin - time to read Empire V. I also understand that Pelevin's IPhuck10 is being translated into English - can't wait.

I finished Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir last night. I'm going to give it a 4/5.

I'm not really sure how to review it without giving away possible spoilers. I took off a star mostly for some pacing issues.

I never read Artemis, but if you liked The Martian you will most likely really enjoy PHM too.

Did not click spoiler in case it's Hail Mary related, but I'm wrapping up David Webber's "In Fury Born" (same guy who wrote Honorverse) and it's terrific. Highly recommended for a Military Sci-Fi adventure.

This is the 2007 re-release of his '93 novel "Path of the Fury" with a full prequel novel and some continuity updates to PotF, released as a 2 novel omnibus. It's the story of an elite futuristic best of the best soldier who sets out on a revenge quest after her family is murdered, aided by (possible spoiler, but the dust jacket/book description give it away)Spoiler!
One of the literal Greek furies, basically making her a demigod
who Futuristic John Wicks the absolute chit out of everyone in her path. For fans of Red Rising.
