Bayard Rustin: The Civil Rights Activist You Probably Never Heard Of

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayard_Rustin
- opposed affirmative action
- opposed identity politics
- opposed African American studies
- opposed slavery reparations
- opposed black history month
- opposed banning black face

He supported the idea of not seeing race. To him racial divisions were artificial and that there was no “white” or “black” culture. To him, we were all human and the only thing that mattered was wealth.

Bayard even opposed the civil rights movement at times. To him, it wasn’t about anger or getting even. To him- it was about unity between all people of all races. Total unity, total equality- simple.
In a 1969 letter to Thomas Billings Bayard wrote

"Negroes have been used and exploited in many ways by White Americans, but it is only recently that they have been asked to satisfy the masochistic craving of disenchanted liberals for flagellation and rejection."

One of our local high schools is named for him, he grew up there. Pretty cool, and the only reason I know who he is. Definitely should be in more history books than some other more prolific figures.

can't use him to promote division if he's got too much common sense.

In the 60's there were so many rights denied or flat out missing, for a guy to oppose that sounds really really odd to me. He could appeal to more people now for sure, but in a period where so much was missing is just strange. We all read about the anger and fight for basic rights during this era.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

he didn't disagree or oppose black people having rights, or rather equal rights as everyone else.

after knowing first hand the exploitation that he and many others have went through, opposed being exploited and used as a political pawn, this time under "disenchanted liberals" as noted in a quoted excerpt from the letter.

fast forward to 2021, and this probably rings true more than ever.

I actually went to Bayrd Rustin High School here in NYC. It was a rough school; lots of drug problems and gang activity. Ultimately it became a failed school and was broken up into four separate schools.
