At work I currently keep about 3 acres mowed/maintained and pay someone to do it.

Been thinking about getting my own equipment and pay someone by the hour to do it and actually keep the entire area maintained instead of just the 3 acres.

What equipment do I need and what would it cost? I know I’ll need a weed eater, edger, a really good blower. - don’t have a clue what I may need to mow / shred?

Need more details. Is it overgrown weeds, bushes and/or saplings? Any bigger trees to take down? Stumps? Or is it already cut down nice? Are you going to mow it weekly like a lawn? Any trees left standing?

13 acres? You're probably going to need a decent commercial riding mower for that, unless you want him mowing all day. Those are gonna run you anywhere from 3k and up depending on what you're willing to spend.

It was a mess last year. All brush and trees and over grown grass. I recently spent a lot of money and got it all cleared and leveled and shredded and kept only about 10 trees. Everything else got knocked down and burnt.

Presently it’s really tall grass and weeds (3 feet maybe 4) and eventually I want to keep it cut every one to two weeks. Max 1 month.

No stumps stood up against the dozers lol

I have an uncle who keeps like 20 sheep or something and just doesn’t really take care of them. If they die they die. Does it for taxes not maintenance tho. Makes his land count as agriculture or whatever.

Pay a local farmer to bush hog the 3-4 ft. Or rent a tractor and bush hog. Then buy a nice zero turn with a 72" deck to mow/maintain it. The extra money paid for the bigger deck will pay off when it saves an hour+ of paid labor every week.

Get a 72" Wright Stander ZK and it will take you less than an hour and a half.

Right answer. Brush Hog or Flail Mower. Without seeing what you're working with, I'd suggest a flail mower.

I saw the prices fit 72" Wright Stander ZK. At $12k plus labor plus maintenance and storage issues I think I’ll just pay someone to do it.

If you're talking about a 13 acre 'field' you are going to need a large/commercial mower if its good grass. Think soft, green, relatively short, 10" or less, etc. Cut at least once every 10 days. If its bad grass, think tall/long, hard, straw like, etc. gets cut maybe 2x per month or so, you'll need a tractor/bush hog.

People I know with around 4-5 acre lots (good grass) typically spend around $8,000-$10,000 on a solid commercial grade 0 turn mower. According to them yard work is about a 4-5 hour job to cut, trim, etc.

Assuming its the 'bad grass' right now you'll need to pay someone with a tractor to bush-hog it then get your commercial grade 0 turn and cut it at least once a week. If your cutting it less then once a week you'll probably have to buy a tractor and bush hog. More money then a 0 turn lawn mower.


If I had to guess I'd say your going to need to spend around 10K-15K in equipment. Assuming your going to pay a single person to take care of it once per week its likely going to take about 6-8 hours per week depending on your equipment and their efficiency level.
If you cut a perfectly flat piece of ground like 2x per week and keep the grass short and everything smooth it can probably handle 9 acres in an hour. But that's under ideal conditions. IRL grass gets longer which slows you down. Sometimes its wet/soggy. You have to maneuver around stuff. Etc. He'd be lucky to cut 13 acres in 3 hours.

Its going to cost you a thousand smackaroos a month for biweekly mows (most people cant mow property that large). The Wright pays for itself.

I got a 60 inch mower that takes 1.5hrs for 5 acres

If that miscer is correct it would cut at double the speed of your mower. I also have a hard time believing its that fast.
