No. There are a lot of famous nailhouses in China. Some have even became tourist attractions or been used as movie sets.
Yes, the Chinese often use unfair methods against these like cutting off their water and electricity supply or making ditches, so the people can't leave and enter properly, but there are still stubborn people, who don't budge regardless.
Communism is actually one reason for this. These people weren't allowed to own real estate property until the 90s. Now that they got it with free market communism, some will fight quite hard for it.

Fake news, you've been reading too much American propoganda. This happened in China so they just built the highway around their house. And this was Chinese government that wanted it, not private developer.

Have this problem with a property I own, 1.5 acres and I need 2 acres to build a condominium complex. The old man living on the 0.5 acres in the corner is happy taking $800 a month in rent for his chitty house instead of selling or even at the least becoming a partner with me.

Could you start digging tomorrow if you got the permit, or do you got to rezone it first? He might change his mind the second he sees action being taken in a zoning hearing. GL

Permit is contingent on 2 acres, literally showed it to the old guy as well and he says he's happy working in the mill and collecting rent from the crackhead that lives there.
So now I'm stuck with 1.5 acres and I can't develop on it, unless I want to subdivide and build a few houses but whats the point?

Any real estate brahs (particularly one's near southern Florida) know what would be a good offer on that property, before and after the construction began? Is it possible that he is playing the super long game? Some people in this thread are saying he's fukked for not taking the million dollar offer, but I'm sure offers will roll in on a yearly basis.

Bro? In China, they don't give a fuk how you feel about it. Remember the Three Gorges Dam? They forcibly relocated over a million people at gunpoint. They give zero fuks. In China, this guy would be yanked out of his house, and if he made a fuss, he'd rot in prison. The only cases you see are high profile ones where the world caught wind of the story, and they can't "disappear" those people without looking bad.

True but at least our people have some rights and get paid pretty good rates for their stuff. In America, most holdouts are just being asshoels. They are offered good prices.

Happened in my hometown, old guy that just wanted to spend his old age in his home, didn't give a fuk about $. The factory that built 3 walls around him only ran for 6 years, think he outlived it.

Currently in my state/town you would need 10 feet on either side of the wall for construction, so that's 10 feet the homeowner isn't going to give you so the wall has to be 10 feet from your property line.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.
