It's cheaper, and it doesn't matter what your house is made of if you're getting a serious tornado or hurricane going through it.

Wood is also easier to rebuild.

That was all concrete construction like they do in Europe.

Wood is better because it can flex and move. This is why the Euro way is awful. You can have sudden structural failures.

You'd be surprised that sometimes land closer to the water can be the most structurally capable foundations on the planet. Hell, look at NYC. The bedrock legit right next to the water is some of the hardest and strongest soil foundations in the world, but when you get closer to Central Park, it sucks, and that's why they don't build there.

Definitely wouldn't of just suddenly collapsed though after 40 years of being up. This has to be a missed item on an inspection, a sink hole, or some other exterior force at play. Even with the roof construction going on, it wouldn't of collapsed like that. This looks like the base gave way and sheared everything off up top. Had it been a bomb, someone would have heard something and there would be plenty of residue and scorch marks at the explosion site. If I had to guess, it's probably a sink hole gave way, cracked the slab in the basement, steel columns gave way, and the entire thing just pulled itself down.

Edit: Just did some research, and sinkholes are extremely popular in Miami, and possibly the most common in the country. Could of been a broken water main or sewer main leeching water into the ground and washing away the dirt/sand beneath it.

Could this be a sink hole? That would explain why it was a sudden collapse and there were no signs.

I don't know what the land is like there but humans have built cities in some pretty sketchy areas and this could have been on top of an old river or cave and they had no idea.

The cartel built Miami and the cartel will take it down. Most likely to send a message to 1 or more particular people in that housing building. GordonXXX caught creepin a crime boss's sidepiece perhaps? I pray for the innocent people tho...looks more than just an engineering failure but I'm no traidie of course.

Whatever the people’s politician leanings let’s hope some these PEOPLE survive and rescue mission is fast with everyone and anyone available. Problem is the necessary equipment to remove the rubble is heavy heavy machinery and it’s very time consuming transporting it there and using it

The screams of the buried will scar many of these first responders for life. A heavy burden weights on them.

Not really. I view most red voters as victims of a scam. It's the militant ones that want to kill Fauci and chit that bother me.

I know this wasn't wood, that's why I said in general.

Honestly, American buildings are so poverty compared to most of Europe.

Your houses are like shacks in comparison to our Chad 120 year old one brick thick (length ways, king) walls. They really built chit to last back then.

Tbh, the new builds are just as bad as America these days which is sad. Nothing like a properly built Victorian era British building, imo.

Don't act like this never happens in Europe. This isn't the place for a pissing contest either.

No, but water and humidity will corrode slowly but shortly. the area has been flooded several times over the years with high tides and hurricanes.

all the buildings in this area mostly have the first floor as parking lots, meaning that the whole building is supported by various beams. Wouldnt be surprised if one of those failed hence only part collapsing. maybe also a sink hole.

but im not an architectural engineer.

Looks like a panel building. Those collapse all the time, usually from a small gas explosion or even strong wings, though never heard of it happening in US.

Looks like reinforced concrete. All you need is one floor to collapse to pancake all the way down. Looks likely since its such a clean break the whole way down.

In some pictures it looks like you can see where rebar pulled out of that exposed wall.

Luckily probably not many casualties I would imagine.

Most of these buildings sit vacant most of the year unless you get a vacationer coming through. As expected being on the beach and sky high rental/purchase rates.

It’s a building built in the 80’s long before the wind codes and structure codes changed after Hurricane Andrew and then again after Irma. And they were working on the roof. So old construction timed with new work can spell disaster if you’re not careful.
