My guess is this was either caused by explosives or a sinkhole. I find it hard to believe a modern building could collapse that quickly.

Apparently, the building has been sinking a tiny bit every year since the 90's. There are visible cracks in the building, and they were being sued for those things as well

None of what you said is true. America has a lot of cities that are built entirely of brick houses. Chicago/NYC, Miami uses concrete construction, Florida uses a lot of concrete constructed houses. Midwest uses wooden houses because of the cost. You're also comparing Victorian era construction with modern construction. There's pros and cons to both. I've restored Victorian era buildings. Most of the walls aren't even square because of the poverty tools they had at the time.
