MIT Living Wage Calculator

I know y'all are all CEO 10K a day-

https://livingwage.mit.edu/

I think it is interesting that the spread isn't as large as you might think. Also could be useful for anyone looking to move to a new area.

Doesn't include every single area, but there is probably at least something for the state you are interested in if there isn't a city nearby.

The topic of minimum wage gets kicked around here pretty often and one of the usual lines is that minimum wage isn't supposed to be for supporting a family. And that's fine.

With this you can view the living wage for an area for a single person with zero dependents. There doesn't seem to be a single location where that is less than $12 an hour and in most places it is closer to $15 an hour.

Raising the federal minimum wage to at least $12 seems totally reasonable.

So what I gather from this is stop popping out babies when you can't afford them on a minimum wage job

What was child care expense?

If only 1 adult is working then I think they assume that the other adult is taking care of the child vs. paying for child care.

Same-ish. Guessing that child care in San Diego is more expensive than in New York.

In other words, don't have kids if you can't afford them. DINK life is insane. I barely work and have mountains of money saved & invested.

Feels good mane.

Used the calculator for my area. I have zero dependents, and make more than enough hourly for 1 adult 2 children living wage.

Oh boy, read through the actual assumptions before you guys get up in airs about this

Assumes you need an apartment to yourself (Who was roommates?)

Assumes you need healthcare / drugs

Assumes you need internet (Who was public library?)

Assumes you need a car (Who was walking / biking / bus or public transportation?)

Assumes you need a bunch of money for electronics / entertainment

This is more of a "convenient lifestyle" wage calculator than a "living" wage calculator. You do not need above of the above to live

right off the bat that doesn't make sense that 1 child is always adding double to the living wage. You aren't paying rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, car payments twice over because you have a kid living with you.

Read through the actual assumptions made. Apparently everything in this is absolutely required to LIVE / EXIST

People who have kids need more money. Unfortunately, needing more money doesn't translate into getting more money, unless you act upon the need.

No pillow no shower crew?

I mean they titled it a living wage, not an "alive for one more day" wage. You could sleep in your car, couch surf, shower at a cheap gym, etc. I think the idea was what you need for an okay/not luxurious life.
The Living Wage Calculator accounts only for the basic needs of a family. It does not account for what many consider the basic necessities enjoyed by many Americans. It does not budget funds for pre-prepared meals or those eaten in restaurants. It does not include money for entertainment nor does it does not allocate leisure time for unpaid vacations or holidays. Lastly, it does not provide a financial means for planning for the future through savings and investments. The living wage is the minimum income standard that, if met, draws a very fine line between the financial independence of the working poor and the need to seek out public assistance or suffer consistent and severe housing and food insecurity. In light of this fact, the living wage is perhaps better defined as a minimum subsistence wage for persons living in the United States.

IDK on this one. I do know that child care can be a lot. Child care for an infant/toddler is more than a year at a state university here.

The idea is that this is what is required for you to live yes, hence "living" wage

You're trying to tell me you need to live without roommates to be alive for more than one day?

You trying to tell me that you need internet at home and not on your free obamaphone or at the public library?

You're telling me you need money for:

The civic engagement component is constructed using 2019 national
expenditure data by household size from the 2019 Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer
Expenditure Survey including: (1) Fees and admissions, (2) audio and visual equipment and
services, (3) pets, and (4) toys, (5) hobbies, and playground equipment, (6) other entertainment
supplies, (7) equipment, and services, (8) reading, and (9) education. Civic engagement costs cover
expenses related to participating in and engaging in civic activities.

To stay alive for more than one day?

Lol, Karen please

They are touting this as what you need to live, and clearly these things are not required for living. So any wage that is derived from these incorrect assumptions is also incorrect

This is the main problem with the "living wage" argument and trying to actually build ****ing policies around this nonsense

Definitely agree with the minimum wage being AT LEAST $12 everywhere and $15 in about a dozen of the major cities. The minimum wage should provide enough income for a person working full-time to live respectably in their community, which hasn't been the case for many decades now.

I can't imagine living alone on $7.25, forget even thinking about starting a family.

people grossly overestimate how expensive kids are. Don't completely shower them with gifts and clothes they grow out of in 6 months and they're much cheaper than one expects.
Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.

Essentially no one but college/high school kid and retirees work for min wage. It's something like 1% of the work force

Child care can be a lot if you only accept the highest quality child care. there are ones that dont cost an arm and a leg.

Also, looking at how it broke down some of the prices...Transportation cost in 1 example shows 1 adult = $5,149. 1 adult + 1 kid = $9,443. How in the world does 1 child almost double a person's transportation cost?

"Other Expenses" is a vague category and also jumps 40% for a kid. Not sure what "Civic" covers and that one more than doubles for 1 child.

The prices they have for 1 adult are reasonable, but they really are assuming that a child requires only the best services available in every category if they cost just as much if not more than the cost of taking care of yourself.

On the bright side, minimum wage for the most part is well above the poverty wage.

A source to back this up

"In 2020, 73.3 million workers age 16 and older in the United States were paid at hourly rates, representing 55.5 percent of all wage and salary workers."

"The percentage of hourly paid workers earning the prevailing federal minimum wage or less declined from 1.9 percent in 2019 to 1.5 percent in 2020. This remains well below the percentage of 13.4 recorded in 1979, when data were first collected on a regular basis."

So 1.5% (The percentage of hourly paid workers earning the min wage or less) of 55.5% (The percentage of workers who are hourly) is 0.8% roughly

People stay poor because they make ignorant financial decisions. Having children and blowing money on luxuries when you make minimum wage is part of that.

You can argue people need a freaking Dave Ramsey course taught yearly from 1st-12th grade so they might grasp how to live within your means. But people are dumb and easily influenced by marketing/advertisements, etc.

Not sure what the exact percentage is for MW, but a little over 25% of working individual are earning under $24K a year, which is about $12 an hour.

$15 an hour = $30K a year

Another 10% or so between $24K and $30k.

Table is from 2019.

To be fair, that does say the FEDERAL minimum wage. Might be a lot higher % of people working for state level minimum wage.

Do whatever, or don't.

The civic engagement addition that you outlined referenced a footnote [29] and when you go to the referenced source that is what you find. It is listed under Entertainment and exactly follows the listed expenses that you were objecting to as unnecessary.

Looks like $100 a year for one person.
