Yeah you get it up and running and feel a sense of accomplishment, then you realize all the apps you want to use are on Windows and you go back there.

Repeat a few years later.

I ran Ubuntu for a while but have run Mint (Ubuntu with more windows-like GUI) since 2014.

The latest iteration that I installed in 2019 was complete plug-and-play. Everything works perfectly, and battery life is better than with windows.

i like supporting a product that's open source and isn't thirsty for my data like Microsoft. For desktop use the only benefit I see windows having is for gaming, and it's just because windows is more popular thus more supported. But even then all the games I played on windows work on Linux.

this is why i was late to the party, but at this point in time everything i use is supported.

Yeah, partially because the last two laptops I bought were low RAM and run way faster on Linux, and also because Windows is unintuitive to me. I'm forced to deal with Windows at work and want to rage at the OS daily.

I also like not letting spyware spy on me.

I've run probably 20 different distros over the years. Currently running Lubuntu but probably going to switch back to EndeavourOS with LXQT. The only reason I have a 'buntu on there is because I have a proprietary wifi card that Ubuntu has the driver for in the repos, but I have to build the driver on Arch-based distros like EndeavourOS

For day to use use it works well. For Office or any Adobe applications Linux doesn't do too well.

I use windows 10 with WSL2.

What's the temperature where you're at?

Restarting a computer because of updates when someone is in the middle of work is inexcusable.

Trying things out every few years is a good thing. You'll be amazed that wifi works!

Software support, the quality of open source alternatives, and virtualization have all greatly improved over the past few years. A decent laptop will have no problem running a virtual machine for the 1 or 2 programs you have to have Windows for. Obviously, there will be exceptions, but it is worth evaluating for yourself.

Another thing people get wrong is by trying Linux out in a virtual machine, live thumbdrive, dual-booting, or a laptop with terrible hardware. That's going to provide a new user with a terrible experience.

Pick up a ~5ish year old corporate mid tower desktop. Get an i7 with maxed out ram for like $200 and toss a 128GB or 256GB SSD in the thing. Dell Optiplexes are popular for this, but every manufacturer has similar corporate models. There will be no problems with installation, good drivers will be available, and it will have decent performance.

Yup. You need to do registry hacking to decrappify it out of the box. It still also bloats like an HTC female after marriage and needs a rebuild every 6 months.

Watchout your snaps, though. It's my biggest gripe with Ubuntu besides the sh!tty name of the distro itself

Mint is my daily driver. Don't see any point in putting up with windows's update bs.

I experience this feeling when i try to migrate to a different browser from Chrome, always end up going back to Chrome just because it's more convenient and less of a hassle, is Linux worth it?

I tried Mint on a desktop computer for a while and it was nice.
Switched it out for XP later cause most of the software I'm running is XP or MS-DOS in a VM.

For a computer online I think I'll go to Linux again. I tried a Windows 10 computer a while back and it sucked balls as bad as Vista.

I originally switched for the security benefits about a decade ago. Sadly, those are mostly gone. Software backdoors are quaint now. Hardware backdoors (bios and microcode), along with compliance from ISPs and email providers, have made anonymity pretty much impossible.

Still is nice not needing 16gb of RAM just for my browser and the calculator app though.
