Dark Matter - Blake Crouch - 9.5/10
A very interesting concept similar to two other books I read earlier this year in something like Piranesi meets 11/22/63. If you are not familiar with those I'd say a little like Matrix movie. I would also say that Crouch's writing style is similar to Stephen King's as well. Easy to navigate and very clear and precise. You never feel lost in the text. However, this story is a bit of a mindfuk where you are never really sure where it's taking you. I really don't want to say too much here without spoiling the story, except read this and you won't be disappointed.

Looks like the reading bug is finally getting to me. Decided to revisit some books from my past.
4. Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
5. The Alchemist by Paul Coelho
I had read both of these books in my native tongue 15+ years ago as a child. It was nice to walk down the somewhat familiar paths again, but I'm not so sure that either would be near the top of my recommendation list.
6. The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton
Contrary to the above titles, this was the first full novel I read in English. While I'm sure I didn't fully understand what I was reading the first time around, and I have to imagine it played a role, minor or not, in my pursuit of a scientific/technical career.

Cool Millions by Jess Walter
Good book about the union breaking in Spokane and the hobos who lived there. Well written.
Savages by Don Winslow. Read it in a day. Most of it on a 3 hour plane ride. Amusing story about pot dealers in the OC and the Mexican drug cartel. Had it's moments, but some cringy ones of the two guys double penetrating their female friend who seemed like a soft 6. Or her digitally violating one of the guys... Nothing worse than old authors trying to describe sex acts in their prose. Lots of 1 page chapters.
Past Tense Lee Child Solid Reacher novel about Laconia, NH and his family's past. Good beach book, same act you've know all these years.

When These Mountains Burn - David Joy - 10/10
David Joy paints the perfect picture of the backwoods Blue Mountain drug addiction that goes on in Western side of North Carolina. Pills, meth, and heroin are rampant here and Ray Mathis is sick of it and is set to do something about it to stop a drug empire that dominates the region. The writing is beautiful in vivid detail and I think this is as good as a story can get and doesn't have to rely on gimmicks to carry it. I will be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Next, I am going to try Fortune's Formula by William Poundstone. I bought this a long time ago when I was reading an investment book. It is about the casino's formula I think.
Today I bought another book The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right. I got this book from the book tools of Titan's recommended books to read.

I reread Reacher #1. I think this one one of his best, and I've give it a 10 if it weren't for some omniscience on Reacher's part that just defies logic.
Absolute Power was another great reread. This is Baldacci's first novel and the one that became a movie with Clint Eastwood. It's been many years since I've watched it, so I can't recall how closely it follows the book.

I reread Reacher #1. I think this one one of his best, and I've give it a 10 if it weren't for some omniscience on Reacher's part that just defies logic.
Absolute Power was another great reread. This is Baldacci's first novel and the one that became a movie with Clint Eastwood. It's been many years since I've watched it, so I can't recall how closely it follows the book.

Just finished the prequel to the Savages, The Kings of Cool. Same type of writing. I liked this book better than Savages. Easy reading banged it out in about 4 reading sessions.

I decided to re-read two old classics by two legendary writers in Ernest Hemingway and John Steinbeck. I originally read both some 25+ years ago back in high school. It's been long enough that both re-reads feel like fresh new reads again.
Old Man and the Sea - 7.5/10
I remember this feeling like was a boring book the first time around about fishing and a man's determination to overcome where others would probably fail. Fishing isn't really too exciting to me but I actually did enjoy this much more than I did the first time. It's probably good that it's a short read because I probably couldn't endure 300+ pages about fishing lol.
Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck - 8.5/10
I like this one a little better mainly because there was more characters that had excellent character interaction. You get a really good understanding between the main two protagonists in Lenny and George, but also everyone else that was on the ranch as well. It's easy to get a good visualization in not only the characters but also in the landscape and in the plot as well. Quick, simple, affective, and beautifully done. Truly a timeless classic tale.

Nothing To See Here - Kevin Wilson - 9/10
The main protagonist, Lillian, is a smart ass who has to nanny a pair of twin kids who can spontaneously combust into flames at anytime. And who doesn't like a smart ass. The kids belong to an extremely wealthy but extremely busy couple that really don't have time to look after these kids. It's up to Lillian to take care of them but can she handle it? Anyways, this is a fairly unique, and somewhat quirky, story that had me lol a few times. A fun read that I enjoyed a lot!

36 The Big Disconnect - This is a book about the impact of technology on family life, the Good, Bad and Ugly. As a parent of young children this book is very useful to me, but if that doesn't describe you this book won't be for you.
37 Project Hail Mary - If you liked "The Martian" I can't imagine not loving this book. Another sci fi thriller built on "actual" science. Read in Audiobook by the GOAT narrator, Ray Porter. Without spoilers there is a unique aspect to the dialogue in the book that is hard to translate into audio format, but I think they did a very clever job of it.
38 Badass - This was a gift, it's a book of 40 short (~5 page) biographies of historical badasses. The author had a very annoying style of complete hyperbole in describing these peoples actions, i.e. "then he rode off on a motorcycle while heavy metal played in the background". This is even more frustrating in a book based in historical fact, since it's often unclear what amazingly over the top actions these people ACTUALLY did and what are just poetic fluff. This was just alright.
39 The Rational Male - Highly recommended "red pill" book about male/female game that the Misc backs pretty hard. I agree with a lot of what the author says, and I liked that he's not a female-hater but trying to be "rational" as the title promised.
40 Fast Asleep - A book about sleep and advice to get a better night's sleep. This is primarily aimed at people with sleep disorders/insomnia - not something I struggle with personally but I got some good value out of this, and I just generally think sleep is fascinating in general. Interestingly the last ~100 pages of the book is all recipes for foods that contribute to a healthy sleep - primarily because they promote guy health and a healthy microbiome.

American Dirt - Jeanine Cummins - 8/10
So there's a big shroud of controversy about "cultural appropriation" for this one since the author is a white woman writing a story about Mexicans and their struggle to leave Mexico by crossing the US border. Yeah I don't really care about any of that.. however, this could be considered sort of a propaganda piece as well (maybe). The wall at the border is a hot topic and ICE, deportations, mothers who can't find their kids are real issues designed to pull on your heart strings. It's in Oprah's book club probably for these reasons, but I just want to read a book for what it is without all the BS. I'll just say overall, I think the story is good but a little long winded.

The John Wells character is an interesting one. I couldn't get access to the first two books in the series, so I started with #3.
Winslow's The Force is one of my favorite books of all time, and this book has a storyline that's equally as interesting but his writing style in this one is way too conversational. It's as if an 18 year old is telling the story, but the ending has an unexpected and somewhat poetic twist ;-)

Ray Porter knocks it out of the park.37 Project Hail Mary - If you liked "The Martian" I can't imagine not loving this book. Another sci fi thriller built on "actual" science. Read in Audiobook by the GOAT narrator, Ray Porter. Without spoilers there is a unique aspect to the dialogue in the book that is hard to translate into audio format, but I think they did a very clever job of it.
