did you play the original ff7? if so (or if not) do you think the new design of action rpg is "better" than the traditional turn based? I am probably in the minority of liking turn based rpg's, and still thinking they are solid game design.

I'm not a fan of the combat in 7R. It's like a cittty in-between. I'd rather have full turn base, fuill action like Nier, or a hybrid system like Xenoblade.

Yes, played through the original several times. Its in my top 3 games of all time. Almost have the platinum for the ps4 version. I don’t dislike the new combat but I would have preferred FF7R to actually be a remake with turned based combat and everything.

I really need to do a playthrough using classic mode the entire time just to see. Ive dabbled with it a couple of times and honestly, it really isn’t much different from the original turn based if you really think about it. It just feels meh to use because its definitely not optimal.

You're out if your mind. Turn based is so fuking outdated.

The only reason turn based combat is good is it lends itself to strategic battles.

With remake, they managed to incorporate that aspect of it into a much more modern, fast, and a beautiful battle system.

Lol if you think we should be taking turns and picking through menus when we now have the technology capable of doing chit like this. I donf fuking understand how you could want that.

I beat remake a year ago. Started the yuffie dlc and it just reinforced how much they nailed this chit its so beautiful and so fun

I agree. Turn-based is a viable game design decision, and good game design doesn't get outdated (just like 2d games can still be tremendous). "real time" doesn't mean better.

Viable != best

A good real time action system is always better than turn based period. To say otherwise is to be stuck in the past

I like variety. I don’t need every game to have “modern” combat. Some of the best games I’ve ever played have “outdated” combat. FF7, Morrowind, Diablo 2. All extremely basic combat but those are my top 3 games ever. Its not nostalgia talking either. I’ve played them all at some point in the last few years and I still enjoy them just as much as I ever did. If I had to pick between FF7 and FF7R, I’m taking the original every single time.

I disagree. That's like saying 3D is superior to 2D, to say otherwise is to be stuck in the past.

Or like saying open world is always better than more linear structure.

Or 3d polygons is always better than sprites (sprites can be gorgeous looking).

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a great example of a series making the move to turn based, and being very successful.

Yakuza is a weird one, don't really understand how people like that. Even when it was a brawler that game was repetitive as hell.

In terms of 2d vs 3d yes, a state of the art 3d game is objectively more impressive than even the best 2d graphics this is just a fact. I feel similarly with action vs turn based.

The average player does not want to grind through slow turn based chit anymore, they want action and that's why more games are moving that way

How you used "fact" is not the proper way to use it.

If you prefer 3d over 2d, or real time over turn based, that's fine. But that's not objective, that's just what you prefer. A 2d game like Ori wouldn't necessarily be better if it was 3d. Same with other games, depending on the individual (Donkey Kong, Sonic, Castlevania). 2D game design is not any worse than 3D, just because it restricts the third dimension.

So I think it's just incorrect to be of the mindset that what you like is factually/objectively better than what someone else prefers. Can you not see that? There are games I'm not a fan of that are critically acclaimed, so I wouldn't say it's factually bad or whatever. I could be able to see what other people see in it, and just not have it be for me. Or to see why someone doesn't like a game I enjoy without resorting to "they are wrong". It's almost narcissistic to think otherwise.

I love ori, I love persona, I'm not saying those factors mean a game can't be good.

But just on a raw comparison nobody will ever say ori is more impressive graphically than like God of War or horizon zero dawn etc. To say others is pure cope.

I probably will, but it's hard to go back to older games after playing the new one lol.

I'm keen on Persona 4 Golden, but since I spent half my life on P5, going back to P4 and not having all the qol improvements/upgrades of P5 just makes it hard to go back and try it out.... But meh, I'll prolly check out P4 one of these days though.

I'm playing through 8 on the PS2 currently, the graphics actually aren't terrible, and the game runs more smoothly. I actually like DQ8 more than 11 but it's pretty much 8->11->5-> the rest of the field. The side things in 8 are pretty fun like the monster battles and the alchemy pot and I like the storyline. 11 had a very obnoxious halfway point "twist" that almost made me stop playing but once I got over it it was still a very fun game.

The biggest problem I have with DQ games is the massive grind required to finish the game, but that's a JRPG staple so it is what it is. I definitely recommend at least playing through DQ8

Just been playing hearthstone BGs while waiting on the next season of POE.

Thinking of dusting off FF14, that seems to be all the latest hype in MMOs. Haven't played since 2013 though, not sure where to start.

If turn based was outdated, Pokemon and Dragon Quest would have died ages ago. You still got stuff like Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem, and other JRPGs that show that turn based is still alive and kicking.

I think it's just that you got bored of it.

I played P4G after beating P5R. I missed certain QoL changes that 5 brought to the table, but I still had a great time with 4G and finished it. I recommend you do the same.

Fukking love undertale bro. If you end up enjoying it when the credits roll, I implore you to replay it doing a pacifist run. If you still want more, do another playthrough as a genocide run. Genocide will put you against some of the hardest bosses in modern gaming.

Yeah I'm not positive how anyone can realistically say "turn based is outdated" amongst the huge game library of JRPGs and Strategy games that get released what feels like annually. There will always be room for turn based games and some of my favorite games ever are turn based.

Dude is definitely confusing fact and opinion.

Yeah that's the Cursed King. I'm planning on at least trying to run through the dragon gauntlet but if it turns out to be a massive pain in my ass I'll probably move on. I recently bought Dark Souls III, and while I'm not huge on Souls games I think I'm going to give it a shot.

Honestly dont understand the hate for either and why people need to think one is lesser than the other. Games like Divinity 2, Civilization, Xcom, Wasteland 3 show that turn based is incredibly popular and that people still enjoy them. Even real time games like pathfinder/pillars of eternity eventually patched in turn based mode because the community wanted it.

Took me a while to get into real time isometrics though, I always found them too chaotic, but taking some time to learn the game, I absolutely love real time now and sometimes there is a feel that turn based can be a bit too slow ... But meh. I love having the options of both.

Gears of War turned out to be a much more interesting game with gears tactics lol.

agreed with all of these. still massively popular and aren't objectively any better, or worse, just depends on the game in general. certain games are better turn-based and some are not. I like games in general that have a strategic/tactical aspect to them. It's like saying chess, snakes and ladders, monopoly is boring/outdated because it's turn-based. Or for cards say a game like Big 2 versus Kemps/Signal.

Modern doesn't necessarily mean better or more fun. If anything, I think alot of games nowadays focus too much on how modern a game feels and looks at the expense of other things like gameplay/combat/story, and other things that make the game immersive and have depth to it. Rather than some game that looks amazing, combat feels good but every thing else is shallow.

Sometimes I get bored of ARPGs and switch to something more turn-based and vice versa.

Persona/Dragon Quest/Fire Emblem/Divinity Original Sin is literal proof that it's still thriving even today. Hell Kingmaker added in a turn-based option because so many people enjoyed the game a lot better that way. We got Baldur's Gate III coming out as well.

So I figured hard mode Airbuster would be the first legit test. He was actually pretty easy. Probably easier than my first time on Normal. Finishing up ch. 8 now. I think I found a pretty good strategy for hard mode now with my materia setups. Not super worried about anything left until near the end.

Just bought BF4 today. I was using my uncle's account to play many years ago. Damn still so fun and the graphics has age so well. It really doesn't feel like an 8 year old game.

There's also that chance that 2042 would blow so yeah Im glad I decided to get 4 today before the sale ends lol

Beat Eligor on hard mode last night. First boss on hard mode that took more than one attempt so far. Didn’t know that he casts reflect, it goes you on and is permanent so I’m sitting here trying to heal myself and I ended up healing him. When I finally noticed, I had to hit retry to change up my materia. Thought I put a counter to that in but it ended up not working so I just had to kill him without healing. So far, hard mode actually feels easier than my first playthrough on normal.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really enjoy 4x strategy games - particularly the Civilization series. Last week a new game from the lead designer of Civ4 left early access and I've been playing it like crazy - The Old World.
Essentially a blend of Crusader Kings & Civ. Takes a little while to get accustomed to everything and the UI, but once it all clicks the game is crazy addictive.

Picked up Dark Souls 3: Deluxe on the Steam sale.

Never been HUGE into souls games but DS3 really seemed like a solid game so wanted to give it a shot.

Most of the homies I played WoW with are starting to jump ship, seems like the game is actually starting to die. Started playing FFXIV due to the recent spike in popularity, I think a bunch of WoW vets switched over, and I got to say i've been having a blast.

The free trial is very generous, you can level up to lvl 60 (current max is lvl 80), you can try out most of the classes, and you can play through the first expansion as well. It's heavily story based, but the quests aren't as obnoxious as other mmos (fetch/long walking quests are present though).
I always overlooked the game because I wasn't into weeb/anime stuff or over the top stories, but it's actually not as bad as I imagined. Guild Wars 2 was more gaudy and obnoxious than anything I've experienced in FF so far.

I'll level to 60 and if the game maintains popularity I'll probably sub and play through the upcoming expansion
lmao I was like lmao
