What is something you took for granted until you lost it?

You realized it's importance after it was gone.

The ability to sleep. Somewhere along the way I forgot how to shut off my mind and sleep, so the doctor gave me some pretty sweet drugs for it.

Would literally kill to be able to fall asleep like a normal person again. Only thing that does it is pills or 6+ beers.

Stop the beers, first off. That's not sleep, that's falling unconscious. You want good sleep, meaning restful with plenty of REM.

Try supplements, l-tryptophan works I hear, Valerian root extract, some people try melatonin of course. You could also try relaxing supps, ashwaganda and GABA being the two better ones there.

More than that, what is your usual pattern before sleep? Avoid screens/electronics for an hour before. Sleep at regular time every night. Be asleep from 10PM to 2AM every night. Take a cold shower an hour before bedtime. Relax.

Do some or all of that, see if anything helps.

Is it really a constant ringing all day? How have you resisted the urge to hang yourself? I couldn't imagine going through life with my ear ringing 24/7, how do you even sleep?

Enlighten me on Tinnitus. I don't understand.

It's a constant ringing in your ears, often a sign of going deaf. Can be caused by things, things which doctors can fix, sometimes not.

Oh I'm aware of all the 'one neat tricks' to fall asleep. Turned my bedroom into a blacked out sleep temple with no TV, I don't use an alarm clock to wake up, put my cell on do not disturb after 9pm and on most nights the wife gives me a back massage to relax.

A while back I developed some nasty insomnia during a very stressful time where my body no longer responds to or creates all those sweet stress reducing / sleep inducing hormones the same way. Typically I avoid pills and don't drink, instead of sleeping I concentrate on just relaxing until the morning.

Yes, pretty much this.

It wasn't constant to begin, it would come and go. The only "treatment" I was offered was a class that sounded like CBT to help you ignore it.

It is in both ears and different pitches. The pitches used to be higher. I've lost some upper range hearing, but so far hearing aids are optional.

I wasn't told of any specific/physiological cause.

I'm in the habit of having some kind of white noise or a TV on to mask it somewhat. My ex was annoyed at the TV and questioned why I didn't use music. Music is fine if I am doing physical things like housework, or gardening. If I'm trying to do mental task I find TV to be less distracting.

ngl it's kinda crazy that your brain has not adjusted to mute it out nomsaying. like if there is a constant ringing from your phone or something, after a few days you are not going to even hear it anymore
