Quit my job without a concrete plan srs

I quit my job a month ago and have two more months left on the lease. I'm thinking about trying standup comedy and moving to a new city. I just want a job where I don't have to do boring chit and can do what I want to do and not work for someone else unless its the right type of work for me


Also thinking of starting a business or going back to school for comp science but not sure what type of business or if comp sci is what I want to do


Any advice boyos? I have a degree and one year corporate experience but don't want to do boring office stuff anymore (I did admin type work)

I didn't have a plan when I quit software development after 12 years. Now I own my own shop, get to travel to sports conventions, etc.

Been there before but even though I was also looking for a career change since I didn't think the move thoroughly I ended up back in an office but with better pay

Chasing hobbies keeps most people broke. Also when you have to do hobbies when you don’t want to in order to make money, it can kill your hobbies. Chase $ and save the hobbies for the weekend - 99% of people would be better suited to follow this advice.

Honestly yeah its fuking amazing but then you do have to figure out what's next and face a little bit of uncertainty

1 year later currently earning $75k without having to get out of bed most days. I am far happier and satisfied. I will most likely be back to before earnings end of this year and then hopefully bump up to mid $200s-low $300s the year after. It was scary at times burning through my savings but it's worth the grind. SRS. You will finally be driven to perform as well if you dont have a plan b. (plan B is obviously to go back to what you were doing, except now with more experience, perspective and self-taught skills but thats not an option damnit).


What i did:

Identify what skills you have
What fields do they apply to
Create company and do basics to get set up
Hit the pavement/phones to get your first client
Do a good job and say you build your business through referrals - most clients are happy to refer to friends/other businesses they know

Ultimately you need to sell a skill/service. Try to avoid over saturated markets unless you are a top performer and cheap. Ideally speak to your network and say "I've just started a business, i'll do x for you for free initially, if you see value i'd appreciate you becoming a paying client of mine"

You will learn quick and it is 100000x more fulfilling and rewarding than being a cubecel or employee srs.
Inspiring brah srs. That's basically the ideal life, working your own schedule and having total equity in what you do. Studies say happiness doesn't go up much if at all after 75k.

What's the skill utilized/service provided for your business if you don't mind sharing?

Oh shut up. I have 80k sales in the first 6 months on just POS for a hobby. This doesn't even include 30k in cash transactions that don't get tracked

I made 90k/year as a software developer and it killed my soul. Now I keep a store open 5 days per week. 7 hours pers day. Travel. Sell online, sell in store, whatever and I can hire people to work when I don't feel like going in.

I know a guy who quit without another job lined up. He wanted to keep working in the industry, but just had it with the company he was at, and had plenty of savings to fall back on. I think he was surprised at how long it took for another job to come along, think it was 4 months, with some rejections and no-responses in the mix. He ended up leaving that next job he got again, but he made sure that time he had a job lined up lol, likely from the fear of what happened prior.

I also know a guy who left the military and burned through his retirement accounts to pay for his living while he was trying to figure out what he'd do next. He regrets it fully.

Solution - don't quit your job without a plan. It's okay if your plan involves a gap between another job, so long as your finances more than cover it. Work on something to enhance your skills when you're jobless for lengthy periods of time.
