I too am afraid of public school for my child. I have been looking into and saving for private ones. Montessori type school seems to be decent but not all are equal. Do lots of research and start saving now.
I would rather my child go to a catholic private school and just remind him to ignore any religion/politics and get a decent education.
If for whatever reason he ends up going to public I hope to have him ahead of the rest and already know or have a good foundation of the curriculum before he even starts it. Also to teach him to ignore most if not all politics and separate that from what he is supposed to learn (eng, sci, ma, history etc.)

So I guess the socialization part got better overall, but he was very easily influenced by others and maybe his parents didn't have very firm boundaries/expectations.
Not the only guy in that age group with a strange attitude around working; angry/resentful when assigned tasks and "you can't tell me what to do".
Um, it's a job and completing assigned tasks is why you are getting paid. If your manager "can't tell you what to do" then you aren't really employable.

Looking to move and having to think about school districts since son will likely go to public school. Dont want to live in one of the smaller neighboring towns, so either got the big city district with more inner city kids, or the more uppity district where its mostly wealthy snobs competing and probably trying to make your kids life and yours hell if you dont join the bake sale. Want my kids in sports too and I used to hate the uppity district. Loved beating those asshles

Sports like hockey it is not even close, private dominates public.
I did both. But I lived in a wealthy town growing up so the public school was probably not exactly "average"

I grew up in the suburbs north of Dallas. I seriously think school could become like asian countries, separating people preliminarily by middle school, a lot more by junior high.
High school could separate people into the following 4 groups:
Geniuses graduating in 1 year plus another year of some specialized experience. These could attend Harvard, etc. or pursue professional school if they want.
Professional school kids. Future engineers, doctors, other intellectual trades. Maybe 2 regular years.
Remedial: These could do low level stuff like assistant work, accounting, paralegal, etc. and would anticipate an extra year to finish.
Future tradies: Gentleman's C in 3 years, 4 if they're a lot of trouble.
Intellect seems to fall into 5 categories.
1) Geniuses capable of leading their own systems (Bezos, founding fathers, quants.)
2) Semi-geniuses capable of leading others' systems with some of their own new ideas. (Chief surgeons, Musk, top attorneys.)
3) Competent people capable of doing others' systems (engineer, nurse, etc.)
4) People able to do some simple tasks (laborers)
5) People needing assistance. (short bus)
This could also involve 2 years skipped for the others in middle/junior high.
So, they're finishing high school at 13 with a gap year of experience to direct themselves.
The current system takes far too long. Look at pro athletes. They compete at 16-17 on the highest stage. There is no reason to think people cannot do intellectual work at this age.
And it's honestly cruel not to segregate people.
Imagine Lebron James stuck in a rec league, or your child trying to join a team with pro athletes still around.
