Everyone loves pickin fights with OP.

But yeah, ATC seems like a good gig if you get in it early, but I guess anything 30 and under is pretty damn early in terms of working until retirement.

Sucks that you have to go where the job is, likely a small dinky airport in the middle of nowhere for a few years to pay your dues.

Working for an airline might be a just as good of an option if not better because of their flight benefits.

Either way, aviation work is cool as hell

I looked into that before starting a CS degree. Looks way too stressful. Def better options (IE software engineering)

Obviously the tech has changed, but my grandpa was an ATC from the mid 60s until the 80s when Reagan fired them all for going on strike. Incredible amount of pressure. Said it was constant stress. That's why there's 1 hour on, 1 hour off. The stress is too high to do it constantly for 8 hours

Yeah you’re definitely exaggerating on some aspects. Brother is an air traffic controller. Has been for 6 years and he doesn’t make anywhere near 150k. More like 75k. Schedule is trash like you said. He’ll go from working nights to days in the same week so his sleep is always fukked. He did say training was demanding. But most of these folks don’t even have a bachelor's degree, so “demanding” is relative. The pension is the best selling point, as it is with most federal jobs.

You're brother works at a low level TOWER facility if he's making that. There is a vast difference between a level 4 tower in Kansas and a Lvl 12 Chicago center, which houses so many more controllers in the building.

Sure, I’m just pointing out that 150k is slightly misleading, as many don’t make near that and certainly most that are just starting out. There’s no question it’s an overall well-paying career. And for the amount of responsibility they (you) have, it should be.

On overnights they have areas that are dark for naps, but on your breaks it really does depend on what you wanna do. Sometimes people work out (at bigger facilities they house a nice gym), sit in their car, watch a movie, play video games, etc.

150k is misleading. You can’t go above a level 8 facility with no experience and those cap out around 100k

Also I know a guy at DIA and they have him and everyone on mandatory 6’s

Could you imagine that, being on 6 days a week for months on end. Fuark that. But otherwise ATC is a cool gig. Basic concepts. Keep metal off metal etc.

Not true since every enroute facility is at or above a Lvl 10, and the vast majority don't have experience when stepping in the door.. the cap for a level 8 facility is close to 150k, but once a CPC the base pay is above 100k

Virtual pilot at the Belgian Virtual Tigers, BVT for short.

Any accident while you're sitting there they will have someone replace you ASAP, pull the audio tapes of what you and the pilots said, have you take drug/alcohol test to make sure you're sober and probably go in a room and go over what happened with higher ups and a union rep would be my guess

That game is so realistic, I thought it was real for a while. I was thinking to myself, damn this job seems pretty intense and boring but I guess it's decent $.

Then I read the guy's info and saw he was playing a sim.

Examples, I'll use myself, first thing I negotiated other than salary was unlimited vacation time. After that no set schedule, and honestly those two things are just as important as a big paycheck.

Nah I need to up my seniority so the more people join the better my RDOs.

IT is a mostly boring career that requires you to also sacrifice plenty of hours in order to complete projects outside of the standard work shift. I know cause I used to do it before this change. You're a sys admin who resets passwords
