Some points brought up in the thread-

-You can absolutely travel to Antarctica, there is no treaty banning travel to the continent. Even though some like the poster above are gullible and believe whatever they read on a flat earth site.

-Sticks and shadows don’t lie. The experiment conducted by Eratosthenes is definitive and illustrates the earth is not flat.

-Blackjack asked what the evidence is of the sun being far away and large (not sure why he wants to know this). I have that response saved and will post it again below. There is a mountain of evidence showing the sun is much larger and far way.

This is correct. I have a friend that did this before Covid went down. The time to travel to Antarctica is in southern hemisphere summer, around Nov-March (my friend traveled there in December).

Can't you just beam a laser at sea level across the ocean for a few miles and see if it hits the same altitude at the target? If it's the same, earth is flat, if it's slightly higher, it's round....

Blackjack, the response again-I already told you, Aristarchus had this figured out in ancient times, without any technology. You don’t care about any of this evidence though, let’s be honest.

During first quarter moon, the moon-earth-sun system makes a right triangle. Find the moon and the sun in the sky at first quarter, they are almost exactly 90 degrees apart, but not quite (you may have noticed the moon at first quarter is just rising when the sun is at the highest point during daytime.....about 90 degrees apart). If you could approximate this angle pretty well, you essentially have the relative distances of the sun and moon from earth, it’s just the cosine. He used this procedure to conclude the sun is many times as far from earth as the moon. But if the apparent size of the sun is the about same as the moon in the sky (it clearly is), then this must mean the sun is many times as large as the moon.

But Aristarchus was able to use observations of the earth’s shadow during an eclipse along with the known circumference of the earth to estimate the moon’s size relative to the earth. Thus the complete information is there to estimate how much bigger the sun is than earth (and yes, it is much bigger, and far away).

Aristarchus’s method is crude, but correct in spirit. In more modern times, we literally have very good measurements of 1 AU. This along with the angular diameter of the sun in the sky, immediately yields the (much larger than earth) size of the sun. Beyond this, all of our understanding of stellar/nuclear physics and chemistry indicates the sun is large and far.

You can figure out the relative mass of the sun to the earth from basic physics. Considering a dropped object at the surface of the earth, mass earth = gr^2/G (where r is the radius of earth, g is the measured acceleration due to gravity of a dropped object). Also, with the orbit of the earth (assume it’s a circle), mass sun = v^2*R/G (where v is the velocity of the earth, R is the radius of orbit. v can be calculated from the length of a year).

Then (mass sun) / (mass earth) = v^2*R/(gr^2)*, which comes out to be about 330,000 once you plug the numbers in. So the sun is about330,000 timesas massive as the earth. So it is much larger, and much more massive, than the earth.

It is unclear why you are so concerned with the size of the sun though and how you think it relates to the false notion of a flat earth.

If you want to, you can ignore all the math and science above, and just observe that the sun’s disc does not change size in its trip through the sky (do not look directly at sun without appropriate filter). If it was close, you would see it getting smaller as it goes away from you: it does not do this. This is because the sun is essentially the same distance from you throughout entire day, as predicted by the heliocentric model. Observe during a sunset at the beach that the actual disc is not getting smaller, it is just being occulted by the earth, bit by bit.

its funny because a classic point of debate brought up by flat earthers is this. the trolling is obv bait and its better to just ignore since they seem to feed off the energy of getting into it with the pro-science crowd
