41 Into the Light by David Weber is the sequel to his novel Out of The Dark. Out of the Dark had some great military action (Weber's the best in the business for Military Scifi) but the plot was completely ridiculous. Humanity is losing an alien invasion of earth until 85% of the way thru the book when (spoiler, but even the book's dust jacket reveals this)Spoiler!appear, at which point the invasion is over in days. It was definitely one of Weber's weaker books. Into the Light loses virtually all the action, in favor of a political subplot. This book mostly moved pieces on the board preparing for the inevitable third novel. I will read the next one but it's not high on my list.
42 Moving Water: The Everglades and Big Sugar is a look into the role that agriculture around Lake Okechobee has had in altering the health of Florida's waterways and the Everglades. Written by an investigative journalist.
43 Covid 19: The Greatest Coverup in History - it's amazing that a book written last year could ALREADY feel so dated. Lots of info and conjecture that appeared accurate at the time but we now know better. I did not get much from this book as a result.
44 War of Honor by David Weber - book #10 in the series, and oddly the only one my library carried. I checked these out since I like Weber and Samraiwise is enjoying these books. It was good enough that I will probably read this entire series once I can find it elsewhere, or maybe buy an omnibus for my Kindle.
45 Best State Ever by Dave Barry is a set of humorous essays by Barry defending his state of Florida as a good place to live. Very breezy and funny - in audio it was only 4 hours so I blew thru this. Thanks RedRaider for the recommendation
46 Relentless - is the latest Joe Ledger novel. These are fantastic popcorn-action thrillers, not deep reading but a favorite guilty pleasure of mine. Narrated superbly as always by Ray Porter. The last 2 books in this series have been setting up a potential endgame for the series, these are still fine but I would like to see it move toward a finish rather than drag on forever.
47 Pappyland - this is a story about the author's friendship with Julian Van Winkle, grandson of Pappy Van Winkle, the creator and namesake of one of the finest and rarest bourbons on earth. As a bourbon lover (see username) I already knew parts of the Van Winkle story, but I learned a lot more. Unfortunately, the author centers the tale around his friendship with Julian, and frequently makes the story about himself. It's fine enough, but those who come looking for a deep dive into the story of Pappy Van Winkle are going to be disappointed.

Last 30 days I've listened through 12 books (176 hours according to Storytel, although I am not sure if they are adjusting this for 2.0-3.0x speed multiplier).
Listened through David Eddings Belgarian series (all 10 books).
In between that I read through "Atomic Habit" by James Clear, so many interesting ideas in a concise format that I actually went and bought the paper back version of the book.
On book 3 in the Serpentwar Saga by Raymond E. Feist, pretty decent so far aswell.
I must say finding the fantasy genre really helped me out with my reading drought.
Listened through David Eddings Belgarian series (all 10 books).
In between that I read through "Atomic Habit" by James Clear, so many interesting ideas in a concise format that I actually went and bought the paper back version of the book.

The majority of Sheely's book has information that wasn't new to me(having a financial mindset, definition of stocks, bonds, assets over liabilities, get a second job), along with interesting strategies for age brackets. What made me cop the book in the first place was i saw his blog post where Sheeley puts an exact number on how many shares of a stock you should either cop at once, or have in general, which helped me out since a lot of links just say "Well it depends.."
as opposed to saying "If you trying to make big money, You need to shoot for 500-1000 shares.
"... if you really are serious about single stock investing, and you can afford to take the loss if something goes wrong, you should try to buy in increments of 500-1000 shares. At this level you will really profit if you are right and the company does well. If you hold 100 shares of company XYZ and they go from $20 to $60, you’ve only made $4,000. This is nice, but really not that substantial in your life. If you have 1000 shares, you’ll have made $40,000. That’s enough for a year in college, a good down-payment on a house, or a couple of high quality, late model used cars."
He also mentioned buying the same increments when it comes to covered calls. Sheely also is aware that having that money to just buy 500-1000 increment shares of a stock only sounds good on paper, so he recommends buying in increments of 200-300 of a stock before going to another stock where you do the same, and rinse/repeat.

48 How to Avoid a Climate Disaster - Bill Gates' book about climate change. This is one of the best nonfiction books I have read this year - Gates is of course a very tech-oriented guy so he goes into great detail about the various technologies that exist, are being developed, or even hypothetical in the fight against climate change. I am not a very political person so I know there is some debate about climate change, but I can't imagine anyone not enjoying learning about all the amazing science being done in the world around this issue.
49 The Happiness Hypothesis - A book about what factors actually contribute to our happiness (experiences, connection, empathy etc). I've read a lot about this subject so this was almost completely repeat information to me, HOWEVER I think it's one of more comprehensive books on the subject, especially if it was the first book you read on the topic. I ordered myself a physical copy of this book bc I want to have it on my shelves to refer to, loan to others etc. I'm pretty selective with what I physically buy since I read enough that I can't own a copy of everything, even if just for the physical space they'd take up.

Really not doing well this year. Just started pilot training so my time is almost non-existent.
1- The Brothers Karamazov - Fyodor Dostoevsky
2- Lords of the Sky - Dan Hampton. The history of the fighter pilot from WW1 onward.
3- The Sorrows of Young Werther - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. One of Napoleon's favorite reads.
4- The Splendid and the Vile - Erik Larson. Phenomenal story surrounding Churchill's time as PM during the blitz.
5- The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable - Nassim Nicholas Taleb. This will be a book I hope to reference occasionally through life
Reading "A Man at Arms" by Steven Pressfield. I enjoyed "Gates of Fire" so much I wanted to give another one of his historical fictions a go.
Working on Leonardo da Vinci on Audible. I've listened to it before, but I recently took a trip to Italy/Florence so I have much more context this time.

Max Lucado is usually awesome, but this one wasn't his best. Hail Mary was very good. For a moment near the end I thought that his friend Rocky was going to be a bad guy, but I liked how they ended it better. And how Ryland Grace spends his last few years, I'm referring to his "occupation," GREAT!!!
I've been listening to Atlas Shrugged for quite some time and should be done with it in a week or so. I read it once and I just bought a paperback version. Max Lucado is usually awesome, but this one wasn't his best. Hail Mary was very good. For a moment near the end I thought that his friend Rocky was going to be a bad guy, but I liked how they ended it better. And how Ryland Grace spends his last few years, I'm referring to his "occupation," GREAT!!!

So so far into the series we are seeing a pattern of one "mainline" novel and one spinoff. I think the mainline novels are getting better (siege was BANANAS) and the spin offs getting worse.
PS book 8 just came out this week. I'm waiting for the audiobook.

The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami – 7.5/10
After reading Kafka On The Shore I was excited to read another story from Haruki Marakami, especially since The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is considered to be his masterpiece. The only problem is I couldn't make any sense of this story, and I felt like I had more questions then answers in the end. I do however appreciate how the story was written, which is where Marakami really shines as a master, but ultimately the intertwining stories throughout felt really disconnected even though they were still intriguing.

The Fox Hunt - Mohammed Al Samawi – 8.5/10
This is a true story about the Yemen born author Mohammed Al Samawi and his escape from his homeland which is experiencing a brutal civil war. Mohammed was raised to hate Jews, Israel, Christians, etc. due to the teaching of the Quran. His teacher, a Brit, leaves him with a Jewish bible where Mohammed discovers that it is very similar to the Quran. He joins a Jewish/Muslim peace conference to get a better understanding of what Jews (the enemy) are like. A network of friends are made with other activists at the conference before Mohammed returns to Yemen and a full scale civil war. His network of friends are the only ones who can help him leave a war torn Yemen which is now a target of Al Qaeda from South Yemen. Mohammed must now face the almost impossible task of fleeing the country he calls home.
This is a good story, and as a memoir, a sad case where lots of people throughout the world face. It's hard to find a happy ending for everyone because countless people are suffering in the world, so the safety of peace in saving everyone is not realistic reality. I like this because the author sheds light on what's going on in Yemen, which is something that gets completely overlooked and unreported by the media.

Finished the Red Sparrow trilogy (by Jason Matthews). I recommend these. Good pacing, interesting story telling, an interesting style of putting recipes in the end of each chapter which was connected to something which happend in the chapter. From torture to "How to make delicious parmasan chicken with grandma's s spices" in the same chapter. The finish to the third book was like a semi trailer hitting you in the face, long time since I got so rattled by a books ending.

A lot of the "podcast bait" type material, if ya know what I mean. But Wheal, who wrote "Stealing Fire" is a really great writer. I'd definitely recommend. This might be the kick in the ass I need after a pretty lame lockdown year.
