How do you cope with seeing your parents age?

Really been thinking about this……once you finally realize your parents are getting old, their time on this planet is running out and you notice they depend on you more and more for company/emotional support…..especially when you see it in them that they themselves are beginning to come to grips with their mortality…

I literally don’t. Found out about death at the age of like 4 or 5 and never came to terms with it.

My own mortality is one thing. But seeing your loved ones get older and older every year…

I know exactly how you feel OP (srs)

I think about this a lot too

Its especially worse if you don't live near them, and don't see them that often. Then every time you see them its a shock

Even worse when you realize you'll be old one day

Shït’s been killing me….I came to terms with my consciousness and death at around 7, but was able to keep it locked away with the distractions of growing up/going to school/etc….but now well into a conventionally ‘successful’ life I realize none of it really mattered in the abstract and it was just that - an elaborate distraction….plus now parents are aging and I realize I’m just going to continue the same cycle myself…..until the time comes for me too………..

I know these feels

When you’re younger you think that once you become an adult things will magically fall into place…I feel like they never did

My Dad died in 2017 about a month after Rich Piana died, and I had a dream about him last night. He was dying and thirsty, and I was trying to find water for him.

Worst part of 20s and I imagine 30s.

You always know death is a thing obviously. But really in middle school, high school, college don’t even think about it. But slowly see if especially if you move away and can’t see your parents all the time. When they hit late 60s and slow down it becomes hard. Just hope for the best that they can live for a couple more decades.

The constant feels of being moved away are ****ing brutal srs. I go through this cognitive loop where I think about what it will be like after one of them is gone, and how much you would give to have more time or go back. But they are still alive right now, but things like career, other relationships, and distance really limit the realistic amount of times you are ever going to see them again and the sober realization of that ****s with me all the time

I imagine most here ITT aren’t religious either.

Religion is the ultimate cope for this, and feel jealous of those with strong faiths that can just handwave this feeling away

But the fact is, think about your grand parents, and their grandparents , and even their grand parents. Generations of fathers, sons, daughters, mothers, who all had their time on this planet and loved one another deeply. Now just gone and not even remembered

Lol even worse, when I spend time with them for long periods it’s boring as hell. Try to make most of it but parents just like to watch Netflix, play games on their iPad, watch cnn , drink, etc

This is really starting to bother me. As kids we used to “help” my dad in the yard with stuff and now it’s at the point where he’s calling us to help because he can’t physically do it himself - can’t get up ladders or on scaffolding etc. come to think of it, he trained us up pretty well lmao must have thought ahead!

Are you ready to get nuked OP? If not, don't read ahead

Say you moved out when you were 18. That's 18 x 365 = 6570 days you have spent with your parents

Now you moved out at 18, and see them for a total of 4 days per year (say a couple holiday visits), until they pass 25 years later. That's 100 days left you have with your parents.

At only 18 you used over 98% of the time you will spend with your parents

At 30 less than 1% of the time is left with your parents
