Chinese state media calls gaming ‘spiritual opium,’ slamming stocks

Chinese state media on Tuesday slammed online games as “spiritual opium,” sending stocks of the country’s largest video game company tumbling.

Economic Information Daily — a newspaper affiliated with China’s biggest state news agency, Xinhua — made the provocative comparison in an article in which it said young people in China were addicted to online games and called for a crackdown on the industry.

The story specifically called out “Honor of Kings,” a popular online game created by Tencent, the country’s largest video game developer.

“‘Spiritual opium’ has grown into an industry worth hundreds of billions,” the newspaper wrote. ”No industry, no sport, can be allowed to develop in a way that will destroy a generation.”

Shortly after the article was published, Tencent shares dipped more than 10 percent in trading before markets opened and were down 7.4 percent early Tuesday afternoon.

The company’s stock has plummeted nearly 40 percent over the past six months amid investor fears about the Chinese government’s broader crackdown on tech, which has also slammed companies like Alibaba and Didi.

Shares of US video game maker Activision Blizzard also fell about 5 percent Tuesday, although that move may have been more related to investor concerns about the company’s internal turmoil over sexual harassment allegations than access to the Chinese gaming market.

As Tencent’s shares were tanking, the company said it would further curb minors’ access to Honor of Kings and called for an industry-wide ban on gaming for children under 12 years old.

They aren't wrong. MMOs mainly are crack for kids. I started playing my first MMO (Legend of Mir 2) at 14 or so. I went through periods of solid addiction with that game, pulling 12 hour+ sessions daily at times, all night stints were the norm. It is literally crack for kids. Even to this day I still play from time to time when a new private server pops up.

I agree, but I believe people should be free to play their virtual crack if they so choose.

Now of course minors are a different story. Kids should be monitored in their activities. Ultimately it's up to parents.

Wow for me at 17. It was almost like a spell that only CoD4 broke me out of. If I didn't have a family, TBC classic could potentially suck me into something smilar. Then again, without a family, I'd have no one to try to set an example for anyway so fuk it.

The problem is, American game companies are designing the games specifically to be addictive, which is different from being enjoyable or "good".

Its not a coincadink that blizzard is getting sued. They are a highly unethical company. Its just like the US. They are going to go down for land stealing. Past sins catch up.

Games are addictive though. I used to play Vanilla WoW/TBC around 8 hours per day. I haven't even touched the remakes and now I'm older and more sensible with time management.

I live in China now and I play that Chinese game daily with my co-workers, you just need self control. I've noticed the Chinese government is definitely getting stricter each year with literally everything compared to 5+ years ago. If you're a child then you can only play 2 hours maximum anyway since you can't login to any Chinese game without I.D. authentication. You can only login to games through WeChat/QQ and it's tied to your identity. I'm sure there's loopholes, but that's the standard.

And just recently I saw ESL companies' stocks fall as well, there's been some news articles about ESL schools being an unfair advantage since only rich families can afford the extra classes, so there may be a clampdown on the ESL industry as well.

Chatting about restricted things wouldn't even happen. You would just be banned if you said something stupid and you can't even name change your username in games because of illegal usernames. Even using DiDi (Uber) you can't type your own message. Only select through a list of pre-approved messages (I arrived at the location, etc)

Lol aye if it wasn't for the fact I've got a family to look after I'd be knee deep into some form of MMO no doubt. I did get sucked into a Legend of Mir private server for 2 months when it popped up at the begging of last lockdown. I was stuck at home furloughed on full wage. I borrowed an i7 10700k, dual 1080 TI, 32gb system from my brother who runs a VR arcade, had the HTC Vibe etc too but ended up using the system to play nothing but a 20+ year old MMO lol.

CCP aren't wrong though. Gaming if left unchecked is highly addicting often at the expense of actual social skills and personal growth. The chit is really like crack. especially games like WoW and Korean MMO grindfests. But I think it's a symptom of a larger issue.

A lot more men in China than women. And the women are selective (i.e: want a taller male partner with decent status/wealth). This leads men to be virgins and turn towards inceldom. What better way to turn yourself off from the real world than to sit at home in the basement and play video games. On top of that how addictive it can be, why the fuk would you do anything else instead? Can lead to and be associated with other things like obesity (due to being sedentary and probably eating too much junk).
