To be fair, there is absolutely nothing about modern China that's communist. It's authoritarian and centrally planned, but anything else is just words. When Mao died and Deng Xiaoping took over he said "to get rich is glorious." They spent years and years with "special economic zones" that were basically little hyper-capitalist enclaves. That crept to the rest of the country and today there is nothing communist about anything.

Obviously, I can feel the outsider vibe if I don't speak Mandarin but if I have a job it will be in a Tier 1 city in an international env and make friends there (Where else can I go then there if I want to live-work there and not tourismo only?). Work, eat food, get some politically agnostic* cultural experiences and leave in 1-2 years.

Doing this would have been a lot more fun 10-15 years ago I think, but I'd think you could still have a good time and learn a lot. If you're white nobody expects you to speak Mandarin. I often pretended not to be able to, or very limited, because it was just easier. This, ironically, is even more true outside of the large cities where it would actually have helped.

On the culture part, while people have lived there for thousands of years, really the entire purpose of the Communist party was to tear down the past and start again. There are very few museums and a lot of Chinese have never been to like the Great Wall even if they live right next to it and most people can't even really read anything written before the CCP took power.

But, very interesting place.

China has a -lot- of unanswered questions. Hell, even their money is completely fake as it's artificially tied to the US dollar. As it stands if we tanked, so would they. Hard. The country has literally never had real money.

Everything OP mentions about the USA is x1000 in China.

Also, 2A. We can still scare our government. If the rage were really there across partisan divides, Americans could have every member of Congress in a heaping pile in a day. And if there were retaliation by others in the federal govt, more would come and rek them too. Our mainstream media drives the divide, keeping the federal govt forever safeguarded.
