LONG post alert but attempt to actually be serious which might not fly here in the misc. Read if you were sincere about wanting advice. This is me....and I hope I can help someone out. I had no one to tell me the way. The important way in life, which is to peruse happiness and not wealth.

This tread has kinda gone off the rails a bit. The pics was just posted in fun. It is cool, but nothing to set as a goal.

There were lots of posts about what do you do, or advice, so I will give it the best I can. I mean this sincerely and it might be kinda long. Take it or leave it, but I have pretty much been on all sides of the fence and I think I have a unique perspective.

All the mirin....and congrats. Please save that. Acquiring 'stuff' is nothing to congratulate me over. If you want to say congrats on a great family or being a good dad, I will take that all day and be proud. The cars and homes....that is just stuff and holds very little true value in life.

Truth is, I had MUCH more than I have now long before I joined BB.com. I have been self-employed my entire life. I am blessed to be a very smart person, but I was on a very bad and self destructive path when younger. We did not have a lot growing up but I never thought of it like that. My dad was an electrician and my mom was a mom. Our family life was everything. My dad started cheating on my mom when I was in highschool and I was the youngest child left at home while my siblings were off at school. I hid from my problems with drinking.

When I went to school I was still lost and just looked to get wasted whenever I could. I just stopped going to classes and drank essentially and failed out my Jr year. I returned home to stay with my mom and my dad did not pay any child support. I took a job in construction over the summer and bought a 10 year old ford ranger. I felt like a loser living with my mom who was forced to work for the first time making minimum wage in a hospital billing office. I was not returning to school. My friends sister lived down south. She said we could stay with her for 3 months if we put a roof on her house.

So I packed up everything I owned in garbage bags and milk crates, loaded in my 10 yo truck with no air conditioning and drove south. My first time really being on my own, I started to get some clarity. I never really had seen how hard my mom was struggling and I could not ask her for money. I took a job working as a framer on a crew. Within 3 weeks, I decided that I could do this for myself. I was 23. I figured out I had enough money to make one week of payroll for 3 guys. So I did it. Fast forward 5 years and I had 60 employees.

In my 20's I never partied any more, I did not even drink. I workout, which gave me focus, and I worked 6 days a week. While all my friends were going out, I was growing an running a business. By the time I was 28, I built a 10,000 sqft home paid for and then a few years later I learned to fly helicopters and started a helicopter business also.

Before I hit 30 I had all kinds of 'stuff' and I never appreciated any of it. I was caught in the chase. Not for money, but since I did not grow up with a lot, I always felt like I had to be achieving more. I never once stopped to enjoy what I had. I would buy a helicopter out of Vegas and fly back to the east coast along the rio grande, through the desserts of new mexico, and I never stopped to think....man this is really cool that you can do this. Instead it was something that while I was doing, I was thinking of what I had to do next.

That all changed for me in 2009. I was almost killed in a helicopter crash. Let with a broken neck and frontal brain injury, short term memory loss and partial amnesia, it was pretty tough. That on top of the economy collapsing and my businesses being effectively shut down. Took me almost a year to recover physically. That was the motivation that got me back in the gym. That is why I have not missed since.

Anyway.in those moments, I realized I never enjoyed my life. I was too busy thinking about the future to just be in the present and take it in. I also realized that not a single thing I ever bought brought me happiness. My happiness came from the love of those around me. It came from my good friends who were really family to me. I made a lot of changes after that, and pretty much swore off the chase of material wealth. I spent the next 5 years semi-retired. I put my kids on the bus every day and was there to get them off. My wife has always been a mom, so we are a single income family. We had enough to be happy an comfortable but we were not living high on the hog by any means. I found happiness like I have never had before.


It is only recently that I have allowed myself to indulge in 'toys'. I went 10+ years without buying a car or much of anything. When the economy picked back up, I started working again, but this time from home and without employees. It is just me. I design custom homes for clients and builders. I have no degrees and I am self-taught in everything I have ever done. I have been in construction in one form or another for the past 25 years. But these days, I try to keep a healthy life/work balance.

Sharing things with my kids is what brings me most fun. My son and I have really gotten into the car stuff. He is 14 and I think why not? Pic of my son and I at the track in the huracan. He is 14 and never drove, like really drove a car. The car has a supercharger and is putting out about 860hp. I put him behind the wheel and after 3 turns he was going 120! My daughter also even comes to car meets with me. I let her drive of course!

Both my kids are very grounded. I have a fantastic wife, and our kids are the furthest thing from being materialistic. None of them like labels or try to flex. My daughter does not like that everyone knows where our home is. It stands out a bit. Not a crazy home, but a nice one and very distinctive so pretty much everyone in our area knows the home even if they dont know me.

I have no complaints. But my advice is dont base your life around stuff. I could get rid of everything and I would be just as happy. Look to be the best friend you can to your friends. Be the best husband and father you can be. And the biggest one, is pick a GREAT girl to marry. My wife has been the reason I have been able to become the man I am. It does not hurt that she is hot too...but she is 1000x prettier on the inside than out.


TLDR.... Stuff does not mean sh!t
Nothing you buy can make you happy.
Strive to be a good friend, a good husband, a good father....that is something to be proud of.
IF...money comes with that, cool. But I take happiness over money any day
