Fuark, bros
Just got off the phone with my Dad. He had his annual checkup and bloodwork done.
Objectively, it's great news: his doctors said he's super healthy and probably has another 15 to 20 years left.
But, fuark. That's so little time. I'm glad he's going to be alive and around to see his grandchildren grow up, but I can't think of life without my dad. Mortality sucks. Some people feel nothing at the thought of their father passing, I guess I should be grateful for having a good one.

I got 50 years with my Dad. When he went into hospice and passed on, when I had to fly back north, he told me, "I'm really going to miss you." Ha, I told I'd see him in 30 or so years as I'm biting my cheeks to keep from sobbing.

We thought the same about my dad, his father lived to like 82 while being 100# overweight, having multiple heart surgeries, and eating mayo and gravy like it was his last meal every day, so with my dad being in better shape and no major heart issues in his 60's I always thought he would be around forever. Until last year when he had a pain in his side, went to get checked out thinking he pulled a muscle, ended up finding inoperable stage 4 liver cancer. He is still with us and undergoing treatment, but the prognosis is pretty grim. The good news is that he has hung on long enough to meet his grandson and spend as much time with him as circumstances allow (we live 3 hours apart).
I don't mean to turn this into a "poor me" post, but more just saying don't take your father's good health for granted brah, all that can change in an instant.

Yeah, that thought crosses my mind a lot. What can you do though? The idea of a world where your parents have died is anxiety inducing. It sucks to watch them get older/sick. I try to balance that negative feeling by reminding myself that, just a few short years ago, there was a world where my kids didn’t exist. Change is inevitable. In a weird way, it’s comforting to know that we’re all bound to die.

My dad was healthy as hell up to his mid 40s, even with the alcohol. Chit caught up to him as drinking heavily takes its toll years later. Expecting a "surprising" call eventually. A shame I've kinda drifted away learning more and more of why our family is so fukt. Jealous of you and anyone with healthy families OP. Enjoy your time with him, there's zero replacement for a good set of parents.

Yeah, my brother is a real ******* to our mother most of the time. She has made mistakes, but she doesn't really deserve it. Never calls to talk, only if he needs something. Never visits. Wonder if he will regret how he acted when she goes...

Also think about the fact that you are that father to your children, and that you have a lot of time to build great memories for them to cherish when your own time comes. You can potentially extend the impact and love your father has shared with you by several decades by sharing it with your own children.
It's crazy to think that you've become that figure in someone else's life.
Take some great family vacations with the old man while you can.

The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Getting old fukking sucks. Death has been on my mind a lot lately. It’s just something I don’t handle well. Thankfully I haven’t dealt with many deaths lately with my grandparents happening in pretty rapid succession. But it’s starting to creep up on the time where it’s going to be my parents next.
That is not a fun thought to constantly have on your mind especially in this garbage ass world we live in today. I’m lucky that my dad and I travel a bunch since I work for an airline. Hoping to him Amsterdam for a few days with him next month.

Gotta make the most of the time we have. My dad has been gone for over a decade. It’s weird going to the cemetery and seeing rows of people I knew and thinking some day assuming I outlive my brother I will be one of the last that knew some of them.
Enjoy that time with your dad Mr B, and with your kids too so one day they feel as you do, that they had one of the good ones.
